that Springfield or M1 carbine you bought for 50 bucks back in the day at a Hardware store in real dollars cost more that that M91-30 Mosin you picked up at BIG 5 3 months ago. even a SKS in the 80s for 75-90 bucks was not that cheap in 1980 dollars.

I bought my '54 tula SKS for $300 in Sept, 2005. 7 years later, I can sell it for 500-700 given the current market.
10 years ago, M1 garand was around $200 from CMP, delivered to your door in 10 days. Now it's $650 shipped, and 60-90 day waiting period from the day they acknowledge they received your letter.
My M44 was purchased for $69 at Big 5 on sale in 2004. Right now it's worth $250. I bought my 91/59 in 2009 for $70 at a local store. It's worth 250-300 now.
K31 swiss pullbolt was $180 at big 5 in 2007-2008. Now they sell for $350 on average.
Yugo M24 or M48 mausers were $199 at big 5 in 2010. Now they're 250-300 private party
It's not a matter of inflation: it's a matter of limited surplus drying up, and increasing in price. Want to see more proof of this? 54R 440round tin cans used to sell for $50 each 3-4 years ago. Now they're $90/each. Want further proof? Find me some .303 surplus ammo. -

What will the prices be in 10 years? If they are drying up now, where will they be in a decade and will the prices reflect that?Comment

Buy quality....What seems expensive today will seem cheap ten years from now!!!
Quality, matching and unmolested guns will always increase in value over ones of lesser quality.

One of the bigger mistakes I've made when I was more or less a kid (10-11 years ago) was refinish my Mosin M44... I thought "whatever, they are cheap, plentiful, always tons around under $100". And it was a fantastic quality M44: 100% bluing, not counterbored, great wood, no dings. I screwed it up. It does look nice refinished, but I destroyed its collectible value.
I also got a Turkish k.kale mauser around the same time for $99, also big5. Bubba'd that, and it had an issue with the worn out firing pin. I couldn't find a replacement, so I sold it to someone on calguns for $60 as a parts gun, FTFComment
