    308 Mauser options

I held my friend's kar98k and well I am in love
any 308 mauser actions or rifles?
or do I have to bubba it? WHICH I WILL NOT DO

    :edit
I already own a M96 swede mauser but I want something that is the same length as the kar98k

I had a new old stock Israeli 7.62mm 98k barrel installed on a Yugo M48 about 10 years ago. It is a great shooter, love it! You can have a commercial barrel installed on a M48 or 24/47 but it is going to be pricey by the time you are done with it.

If you go with the spanish mauser the FR8 is the most suitable --
it is a 98 action, the others are all 93 variants.
An Isreali rebarrel shows up here now and again, somewhat pricey --

An FR8 will give you something very similar to the Ruger Gunsite Scout, but at half the price. It just lacks the detachable magazine. Until the current buying frenzy came along, one could find FR8s on Gunbroker for $350 - $450.

If you can find a shot out K98, Coles has Norwegian Kongsberg .308 K98 profile barrels for $99...brand new, in the white.

I bought several a few years ago and they look great.

Be careful of the 1916 Spanish Mausers that have been rechambered to 7.62 x 51...they are based on the small ring design, which is not considered as safe as the large ring Mausers.

Stay Away from the Spanish Mauser!

I checked SAMCO's site a few days ago, didn't see any Spanish Mausers.

FYI - I bought one from Samco last year, actually I had three.
First one beat up like crap sent it back
Second one looked ok but the shell would stick after firing - sent it back.
Third one same issuse as the second sent it back & got my money back.

IMHO (unless you buy it from some one who has shot it & had no issues):
STAY AWAY! Get some thing else.

I'm really thinking of just buying a beat up kar98k and re-barreling it to 308 winchester...

seems like israeli mausers are no where to be found!
I got shut down from a seller up in Sacramento who was willing to ship and he shut me down after saying "I ask too many questions"

It's weird, a few years ago the beat up Israeli K98's were all over for $100 to $150.

I've got a small ring Spanish that shoots Indian Nato fine. I've never heard of any failures related to the rechambering. In 1987 Guns & Ammo did an article on them when they were first offered by SAMCO. Several were tested by H.P. White labs in excess of the max .308 load of 55,200 psi. They were tested to destruction only after exceeding 98,000 psi. But anything can break. I've got an Ishy 7.62X51 and it's accuate. I'd like an FR8 but they're expensive (to me) and hard to find. The main thing about the Spanairds is they kick like an M44. PAX

To broaden your search parameters for a 308Win/7.62NATO Mauser, here are 3 you should look for:
                              7.62 Isreali.........rebarreled by Isreal to 7.62/308
1912-61 Chilean........rebarreled by Chile to 7.62/308 using 1903 Springfield barrels rechambered.
                              FR8..................Spanish M98s rebarreled with HK91/G3 barrels in 7.62/308.
