    K98-School Me (Large PIC warning

    Hey guys,
So it looks like I'm going to be getting a K98 sometime in the near future through one of my father's co-workers. Now I know my way around a firearm and what to look for when I get to handle the rifle in person: bore, action, wood, crown, etc.. But what I don't know much about is what K98s are rare, collectible, what vintage is best, or what's just plain cool. Here's the K98 in question. I only received a picture through my father, and haven't had a chance to ask the guy selling but he want's $300 for it.
If it passes inspection, is it worth it at that price? Also there are others in the collection of 20 or so he owns, anything I should keep my eyes open for?

Looks like a Yugoslavian M48, not a German K98. Im not sure on what these go for but a yugoslavian M24/47 goes for $200-250 and AFAIK an M48 goes for a bit more.

Thanks, glad I asked! Are the yugos still good shooters or should I just search for a real k98 instead?

its an M48, if the numbers match, it should be a good shooter, $300 isn't a steal and closer to the upper end of what these go for.

Maybe, my father's coworker's friend died and was a collector, and now is helping the widow of the collector sell the collection. But I don't think he knows about gunbroker

At $300 your getting into possibly finding a K98 but I think they are closer to $400-450 for a Russian capture. In the long run, a Russian capture K98 will increase its value faster than an M48 and they are only getting pricier.

Doe's he have some more he wants to sell? I'm in the market for a nice german k98 at a reasonable price.

I'll have to see if I can talk him down a bit then. I believe it to be numbers matching, ( or so the co-worker says) and if it is what would be acceptable price for it?

I believe so, the guy had 100 or so various C&R rifles of the WWII vintage. My dad finally talked to him today and is sending me over the hard list of available rifles later this evening.

The Yugos are solid shooters, but the bolt is not as smooth as any true K98k I have ever shot/owned. I have also noticed a difference in the sights...the Yugos seem to be lower to the rifle and therefore I never got as good of a sight picture as on a K98k.
Yugo 24/47s used to sell for $200...lately closer to $300. Yugo M48s usually add $50 or so to the price.
Personally, I would not hesitate to pick up a M48 for $300 except for two things:

                        1. German K98ks can be had for that price or nearly that price
                        2. Surplus 8mm Mauser is getting hard to find. When I first bought a Mauser, 380 round cases could be purchased for $75. Last time I saw one it was about $125

1903-a3 would be first on my list over a mauser. That would complete my collection. Thanks for the follow up. Looking forward to more info.

Here's the springfield. I think it was in the asking range of 550-600
