Info appreciated on this M1A In .243

Have a M1A Chambered in .243 But the Heal says 7.62
My dad (who owns this rifle) says he called Springfield and they told him it was indead a .243 from the ser number

why did they not re-mark the caliber on the heal or elsewhere if this was factory made?

also any input on the value of this would be appreciated

the condition is...like the day it was made...nota scratch on it

For a while, Springfield marked the heels of their rifles with 308, but when they started adding calibers (243 Win and 358 Win) they ran into the very problem that you have.
So, they stopped marking the caliber on the heel. Instead they marked it on the barrel.
An M1A in 243 Win is a rare bird, and one to keep around.
