    need SKS help..

rifle failed to cycle, fought with gas tube assembly and final got it off.piston rod was lodged in carbon.

there was no spring or piston extension in there either.

am i correct in assuming that these 2 items are missing? and i assume i need to order replacement parts also (have them lined up already along with gas tub e cleaner).

    solved:
was missing a piston extension and spring

I would watch an SKS dissemble video on you tube to varify what parts you are missing, check with AIM surplus, Desert Fox Sales for spare parts. Good luck.

All right so I assume in attached link that you are missing parts number 3 and 4 but have part number 1. Part 1 and 4 are located inside the site block only way to remove them is to flip the latch straight up. If there is nothing in there then you are missing those parts which you need.

My Russian has neither of those parts that I can tell, and fires and cycles fine. You may try using gun oil and a wire bore brush to clean the inside of the gas tube. Then soak the piston in oil as well to loosen the carbon and clean as well. May work, may not!

No sense in buying parts if you don't need em.

Piston extesion and spring are in the rear sight base and dont come out. You should be able to push it in with some pressure and it should spring back.

There is only the long piston inside the gas tube. Clean it till the piston moves back and forth iside it and it should be OK.

It is possible that if there was that much carbon build up the spring and piston are stuck in gunk. Carefully try to disassemble verify by feel if they are in there. Remember if they are stuck and you have the release lever straight up they can fly out any time under enough force to cause injury.

I found a couple SKS's at a gun show and both were not well maintained, the springs and rods were stuck in what looked like years of crap. One shot a good 10' to another table when the owner tried to get them out. I passed on them.

every time i shoot my SKS i clean both pistons, the tubes they move in and the port that feeds hot gas to the piston in the hand guard. it should be part of every SKS cleaning. it is so simple to do.
my son in law has a Chinese SKS that he has owned and fired for at least 15 years. he has never removed the hand guard and cleaned that piston inside.someday it will be so pitted and corroded it will not work and he will be mad about it.

Don't clean it 300 times, cry once.

I like your son in laws method.

I'm having the same exact problem with my Norinco. I just bought it a few months ago, fired it for the first time last month, and it wouldn't cycle. I have the spring and pin, but I think there's an issue with my piston, gas tube, or both. Any suggestions???

Make sure there's no cosmoline in the rifle.

over-cleaning is just as bad as not cleaning sometimes. unless you're firing corrosive ammo there's no good reason to clean that stuff every time. i swab the bore and clean all the parts that have been touched, and leave the gas alone but about every 4th or 5th time i shoot the '52. never any trouble. the extension and spring can sometimes have cosmo in them, pull it out, clean it once, ignore it for a few years, they don't get very dirty.

is there a disassembly routine posted on youtube? i am trying to buy one and want to take apart for cosmoline removal.

                          There's a bunch of them

Its pretty simple This is a good pictorial http://www.surplusrifle.com/sks/carbine/index.asp

Tips i would give: have a couple small wood dowels for tapping up the receiver cover latch and the gas cylinder tube latch so as not to scratch the metal up.

Taking down the gas system is the only tricky part. The latch goes to one position to let the gas cylinder tube free.

Make sure to keep it in this position because it is still capturing the spring loaded extension rod

Make sure to remember that the gas piston is inside the gas cylinder tube
because it loves to come briskly sliding out of the tube and onto the floor

Make sure you hold your finger over the extension rod before you move the latch to release it as this one loves to go flying across the room if you don't
