    M1 reloading

Does anybody have any good recipes for reloading the M1. I am thinking 150gr projectiles. I am new at this so manufacture of the supplies is greatly appreciated.

Using HXP Greek brass, work up from 44 grains of IMR 4895. Sierra Matchking 150 grain HPBT. Stay with powders of similar burn rate and keep the fps around 2700. Faster burn rate powder will bend your op rod.

I'll have to respectfully disagree with my good friend on this issue as the opposite is true. Slower burning powder will cause excessive high port pressure that "could" bend your op rod. You want a bit faster powder but not too fast. I would not go slower than RE-15 but that is just me. Consult the Hornady manual as it has Garand specific load. I use IMR 4064 for both my bolt guns and Garands.

pro-nra has it correct. 1-M-42 has it backwards.

IIMR4895 was one of the arsenal powders. If you look at the burn rate chart you can see RL15 is slower, 4064 slightly faster.

Faster powders are at the top, slower powders at the bottom.

Here's a good site for Garand recipes.

I frankly throttle it back a bit and use 47 grains IMR4895.

Old age is getting to you huh? I also think it has something to do with that female sexual implement at the end of the barrel of that very expensive rifle that is messing with your head.

Don't want to thread jack but from the Hornady's M1 Loading it says I can use Varget to load for my Garand?

As I mentioned, I personally would not go slower the Reloader 15. I use IMR 4064 and Varget falls between Reloader 15 and IMR 4064 so you are GTG with Varget. Look at the chart Rob provided above and you can see what I'm talking about. I'll try to find another chart in a spreadsheet format to see it better.

I use the powder the M1 Garand was desiaI use 47grs of IMR 4895 with a 147-150gr bullet. Works well and does not overstress the rifle. I do understand that other powders can be used also. I just choose to take this route

That is my exact load, but I use Hornady 150 FMJ.

Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

FWIW, 4064 & RE-15 are the gold standard for the 30 cals, IMHO. Over the past 25+ years, I have found RE-15 to be the most tolerant in autos. I don't know why, but 4064 works best in a bolt & RE-15 works for the autos. Considering Federal has been suspected of using RE-15 for the past several years, it might be a good starting point. Varget is also pretty hard to dispute. It amazes me how many recipes actually have work ups for Varget; that may be the most versatile powder, but not the best for your stick. Good luck on the build up. - DAW

I love Varget or 4064 under the 155 SMKs for both my M1 and M21.

I have been shooting 46 Grains of Winchester 748 with 150g FMJ with perfect success in my H&R. Never have any issues at all. Just reload and shoot it up.
