    SKS or Field Grade Garand?

I have a Service Grade Springfield Garand on the way from CMP - I also have an SKS in pretty decent shape.
I'm considering selling the SKS to get a "beater" Garand that fills basically the same role as the SKS. My last service grade (that I sold) was almost too nice - I was afraid to ding it
The SKS is my only x39 rifle, so it might make more sense to have another Garand so I have two that share ammo.
    Any thoughts?

I got a Field grade SA a few years ago and it's really a nice shooter. Park was a little more worn than a service grade and the stock was worn but totally serviceable.
It was $495 + shipping then. Great deal!

It would simplify your ammo logistics. IMO, another Garand would be better for you. I would think a decent FG Garand would be more accurate than a typical SKS.

If your M1 from the CMP arrives before the 19th, come out to the next Vintage Military Silhouette Match at Sac Valley. We always welcome new shooters. I guarantee you will have a blast.

Thanks for your opinion. I doubt my SG will come in before the 19th

This is true, but I also have other guns, these won't be my only rifles.

My 59/66 was super reliable, but shot around 12" groups at 100 yards. Sold it so I could buy a scope. I'd take a Garand over an SKS any day.

x39 ammo is cheeper to shoot as well. What are your intentions for your rifles?

Standard, you already know the answer!

Plus, getting a field grade means you can likely get a nice WW2 gun.

The Garand will shoot better, be worth more, and it's ammo is only marginally more expensive than current 7.62x36 pricing.

All of my rifles are just for shooting. I don't harbor SHTF delusions or compete in matches. I like a rifle to carry with me in the woods when hiking, but otherwise I like shooting steel at intermediate ranges (100-400 yards). My AR is an M16A4 style, not an M4 style if that helps.
I don't shoot as much as I'd like to, which sucks, but makes ammo prices not that huge of an issue. Full time work and full time student

I was hoping you'd come here to smack some sense into me.

Agreed. The overall characteristics of the rifles can be summed up by the above statement IMHO. The Garand is just a little too bulky/heavy for my taste. SKS is alot easier to manage (strapped to your back so to speak). Plus it's a classic, why not just keep it in your collection for the historical aspect?

                          My two cents.

Thanks for the...Insight . I've shot Garands before and don't find them unpleasant, though obviously the SKS is less so. As for historical aspect, I find the Garand more interesting. Not to take anything away from the SKS, as they are pretty cool.

Your going to have two great weapons...keep them both and instead of buying another, just buy a ton of ammo or reloading supplies
