Second on the capped pvc pipe, full it up with mineral spirits, let it soak overnight

Why go through all that trouble?

Just spray it with WD40 and wipe it down .. done deal

You can pour really hot water on the barrel action with the barrel down. Most cosmoline will come right off. More stubborn areas brush with more hot water or use solvent.

I just did a couple. Bought a chemical tub from brownells for the other parts. Bought pvc pipes and caps from lowes. Capped the end and cut them down to a little lnoger than the barrel. Removed the trigger and was able to slide them all the way down to soak in minetal spirits. Worked like a charm. I hink the tubes were 2 1/2".

if you can still find them a wall paper tray is the right length to lay the barrel and receiver in one. i threw one away a few years ago and now even at a paint- wall paper store they no longer sell them.
you do need to soak it.

Cosmoline comes in 2 flavors, the soft jelly and hard waxy.

The soft jelly type you can remove using heat, as they have relatively low melting point (slightly above 100F). Here in So Cal you can leave the rifle dissembled outside and just wipe it down every hour or so. This is especially useful in removing cosmoline deep in your stock. In the winter time, I just use boiling hot water.

Once the cosmoline is oxidized it becomes hard and waxy. The hard waxy type require some kind of agent to soften them (WD-40 or paint thiner). Before I use any chemicals, I will try to scrap them off. Sometimes they come off as a chunk. Whatever is left over, I will spray some WD-40 on it wait a hour or so, they should wipe off with some heat if necessary. Really no need to submerge them...

Either way, cosmoline removal is a labor of love!

i like the PCV idea. 2 1/2 inch will clear the receiver ???

I'm with the others here who say why make it more complicated than it needs to be? Heat or mineral spirits will do the heavy lifting; use a rag or patches/rod to clear out the heavy deposits, and then just make sure you wipe it all down with mineral spirits. To soak a rifle of the Mosin's length, even in PVC, would require a lot of mineral spirits or other solvent, which is a pain, not cost effective, and leaves you with a gallon plus of toxic liquid to get rid of.

Stick a rag (plug) in the chamber. Set in sink/bathtub/whatever. Fill barrel with odorless mineral spirits. Let sit for a while. Remove plug. Run HOT water through barrel until clean. Follow-up with a rod and patch/boresnake as if you were cleaning after shooting.

Doesn't take much mineral spirits and it works.

I did two mosin's with two tubes and one brownells tub. Bought two gallons of mineral spirits, used 1 1/2 to fill both and the tub. When I was done, grabbed a funnel and put it back in. Lost about a cup. Gonna pop em open this weekend and do the type 53 I got from SOG today. Set it and forget it.

I had a stubborn 91/30 and took the lazy route.

I took a big cardboard box, cut it into a strip about 3ft long and 10 in wide... then folded it into a long box / tray shape and taped its corners to hold shape.

Then, took a few layers of aluminum foil and lined it so it could hold fluid (carefully).

Then, threw in some old gas I had ( my lawnmower gas was kind of old ) ... maybe a half gallon or so.

placed the barrel and action, and some small parts in it... let it soak overnight with foil over it like a lid ( out side on back porch ).

That thing was nice and easy to clean!

I did swish it around a little after the first hour too.

When possible, heat is your gentle, safe friend.

Ace sells wallpaper trays when you need solvent. Green plastic, around $6. Multiple use product.

Be careful with flammable liquids. No need to leave open containers out overnight.
