The odds are that it is not an original. Originals are rare and expensive. Look at the proof marks and see what they say.

Post a picture. What does the cylinder look like? Does your date correspond to the correct serial # range?

It should have a brass strap instead of that stainless one, dead giveaway it isn't original. Wood on the grip looks too shiny in color, barrel looks to be too long for a pocket pistol also.

You can barely make out the stagecoach on the cylinder.

Looks like a restoration attempt. If it's a fake, it's a good one, even has the last three serial digits on the frame and barrel out of whack from the first 3 like an original.
The grip frame was brass, but it was silver plated. The black you sometimes see on the brass frame is what's left of the silver, it was a thin plate that wore off with use.
Is there anything on top of the barrel?

I don't know, the appearance seems to be very crisp for an original. Sharp edges on the cylinder cuts and all of the edges. Tooling marks very visible.

Unless it was kept in an oiled felt box since day one, it would likely look much like the 1860 photo that was posted.

The 2nd and 3rd gen gun parts were made in Italy by Uberti for Colt. The parts were shipped unfinished? to Colt for assembly. They were exact reproductions of the originals, and being shipped as parts, did not have Italian Proofs.
Now here is where I'm not clear, a call to Colt could probably clear it up. The 2nd Gen guns were serialed with the first gen, or so I've heard. That still doesn't explain yours having a first gen serial number.
