    Nagant ammo

I'm going to the Ventura gun show tomorrow, looking for surplus to feed my M44. Has anything been giving you guys problems lately that I should avoid?

Nagant ammo is the 7.62x38R revolver cartridge. Make sure you ask at the show for Mosin-Nagant ammo or 7.62x54R.

Does your local range allow ammo that attracts a magnet? If not, you might not be able to find any usable ammo at the gunshow.

I have thousands of rounds of 7.62x54R I can't shoot at cali ranges.

I haven't seen surplus 7.62x54R at gunshows in years!
They always have commercial stuff though, at less than retail prices...

Cheap commercial works for me, too. I'm really just going to be looking while I'm there, and the range I usually shoot at doesn't restrict rifle ammo. Only rule is nothing larger than 300wm.

And A2, thanks for correcting my wording. The fact that there actually IS a 7.62nagant caliber completely slipped my mind. I always do ask for 54r.

Are you SURE about that Invictus? Every public range I know in Southern California does not allow ammunition that will attract a magnet (because it will spark when hitting rocks), I do not know of any surplus 54r that will not attract a magnet.

Now, that aside I don't know jack about gun shows but if you want to buy surplus check the iNet and also check Ammo Bros in Cerritos, they ahve surplus ammo although I'm unsure of their pricing.
Alot isn't a word and allot isn't the word you think it is.

I'd really like a Colt 1903 frame, bad finish okay!
I'm also looking for a good deal on a 1911 frame or two for budget/spare parts builds.

Take a magnet and check what you want to buy if it 7.62X54R. Don't trust the packaging or what anyone tells you. You'd hate to buy a couple thousand rounds and not be able to shoot it.

I don't know what range you shoot at but I don't know of any public ranges that allow it.
I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.

As I've gotten older I thought I was gaining patience, then I realized I simply don't give a crap.

I asked the guys at Shooter's Paradise in Oxnard about it, and they said centerfire pistol ammo had to be lead-free, but any rifle ammo under 300wm was fine. I was honestly shocked to hear that, too.

Actually, that's not completely right. Nagants have been produced in several calibers. I have an 1895 that is chambered in 7.62x38R and, I also have an 1887 chambered in 7.5Nagant. I've also seen Nagants chambered in 45LC.

You can shoot steel core up to 50BMG at Agoura. Or, if you need to load some non steel core or lead free ammo, PM me and I can help you out.

thanks for the heads up. I usually go to SPO (and I just checked the 54r they sell; it is Brown Bear bi-metal, and does attract a magnet) because it's a couple blocks from my office, but I've been wanting to come down and check you guys out for a while. Hopefully I'll be able to get out in the next week or two.

You mean it had to be armor piercing steel ammo?

Yes I heard about the lead free ammo for hunting law but the industry has not caught up yet so what is lead free centerfire pistol ammo? Never heard of such except for the milsurp steel stuff that is what I hear is banned at some ranges.

There's been lead free handgun bullets for over 20 years! It's not AP. Look at Barnes bullets for one. Also several companies make frag. rounds for handguns. The frag. stuff is great for shooting steel with. It just turns into copper dust when it hits.

At the gun shows down here in southern california, I've seen some surplus 7.62x54R ammo on sale. Miwall's usually carries it for about $85 for 440 rounds. As another poster said, no one around here lets you shoot it, because it's magnetic.

If the 54r ammo is steel core, not lead, that means you can shoot squirrles with it correct? ANyone know? ideas?

NO! Most, if not all, steel core and steel jacketed ammo also contain lead!
