Custom Mosin?

I ran across some pics of a custom Mosin on ebay (selling stock) and I have a few questions based on the photos below. I am interested in building one up like this one, but I don't know how to pick a good base gun and what is needed to make one like the pics.

How accurate are these guns generally?
What do you think it costs to build one like the picture?
If it can be done cheaply it seems like it could be a cheap, yet cool looking alternative to a Howa or other lower cost new bolt action rifle.

Stock:
Looks to just be a Boyds or similar 99 bucks

Bolt bent and threaded plus knob 100-200 bucks

Rear sight removed and dovetail rail converter used 20-100 bucks

Paint:
Automotive or Rattle can or professionally applied
20-200 bucks

Trigger:
Just a guess here but if you are going to spend this much anyways it really should have a good trigger.
So at least a Finnish Trigger Sear 20 bucks
If not a drop in Timney Trigger 200 bucks


Really it all depends on how much work can you do yourself or if you have a cheap machinist / gunsmith. All those custom mods add up really quick!

Its probably going to be cheaper to buy a modern rifle and mod it out with readily available parts.

A good base gun would be one that has no proof marks of any interest, non important armory / year combo, stock in bad condition or missing, counter bored barrel since its going to be cut back and threaded. But a rifle with a good strong bright bore.

I don't know if they come from different armories/importers so is there any difference in the assortment available based on where you buy it? I ask because I live in Riverside and both Turner's and Big 5 have them for about the same price. Would my chances of finding a gun base gun be better at one or the other?

There are 2 primary armories you are going to run into Russia's Tula and Izhevsk (Izzy)

My point is to not mess up anything that has historic value.

There are also different importers, they at times may have better lots then eachother but that is not too important. That and where they put there import marks and how big they are change over time. So importers don't matter too much.

It's going to be cheaper to buy a better shooting modern rifle than it would be to pimp a M/N like that.

IMO, unless you're a gunsmith with access to the necessary tools and materials, then making a MN like the one above is going to be very cost ineffective. The thought of putting $1k into a $100 gun makes my head hurt

But if you wan to do it just for a fun project then go for it.
I like tinkering so I bought a Mosin just to play around with, but was on way more of a budget than what you're picturing.



I spent exactly $235 OTD for it as pictured, but the bipod actually belongs to my AR15, just put it on there for fun. If you discount the bipod then its just a shade over $200.

Which is decent for me, and it was a fun project.

It will definitely out shoot any Mosin out there -

Now the cost of the ammo is obviously different -

But I'd guess most of us only run 30 - 40 rounds down these bolt actions in a range trip anyway...

That looks like fun! I build AK's daily for an 07 and don't pretend to be a gun smith but if you're serious I don't see much skilled labor there. Barrel threading-CHECK I got a lathe. Bent bolt handle-CHECK have welder. If you want one PM me I'll work an affordable deal for ya on a mosin like that. oh an since I'm a mosin collector I can't chop up just any mosin it's gonna have to be one thats already been bastardized. I will need a hex receiver Tula with an SA stamp on the barrel. This means the Finns already had their nasty hands on it, YUCK! I will re work the hex receiver to a round and remove all the icky stamps the Finns put on it

I do have to admit that some of those classic old Mosin sporters from the 1930's era are rather nice looking and if one came along at the right price I might really be tempted to give it at least a temporary home.

And I suppose with the higher quality modern stocks and other accessories out there (not that ATI crap) you could build up an attractive and good shooting rifle using something like a Mosin. But I don't really think it would be a cost effective alternative to the commercial hunting rifles out there.

Back in the 1950's and early 1960's, places like Interarms and Golden State Armory/Santa Fe imported a lot of surplus rifles like Spanish Civil War Mosins and Mausers, various other Mausers from South America, Sweden, etc. Back then the market for weapons like this was a little different than now, so they converted a lot of these into cheap "sporterized" hunting rifles. Some just had the stocks cut down (and barrels if they were a long rifle) and maybe a ramp style or '03 Springfield front sight added. Others were better done with nice commercial sporter stocks. If someone wanted to play around with trying to build their own "custom" rifle, one of these already modified rifles would be a good platform to use.

For anyone in the Riverside/Orange/San Diego County area, last time I was in the pawnshop on the corner of Winchester and Diaz in Temecula, they had a "sporterized" Mexican Mauser in the rack for around $235, as I recall. It's been rebarreled...don't remember what caliber, but it seemed interesting and modified enought that there is really nothing like the bolt or receiver that is salvagable to restore another Mexican Mauser. If it could be picked up for around $200 OTD, it might be a fun rifle or possibly could be upgraded into something nicer. Mexican Mausers are pretty rare, and have a unique short action, small ring receiver, action that at first glance looks like the older Model 93/95 type action, but is actually an M98. They were popular years ago, along with other now rare and valuable small ring M98's like the Kar 98a and G33/40, for building up custom rifles.

i take my mosins for what they are, fun old rifles to own and shoot. i bought a savage bolt in 223 that can shoot better than almost all mosins and i paid under 400 bucks for it. what i am saying is these are very nice rifles as is. but they made zillians of them and i am ok with modding a run of the mill war time izzy. please leave alone the mosins that are more collectible.
