    Help me choose a 91/30

    1940 Tula 91/30 or 1942 izhvesk 91/30

The 1940 is a ill beat but has the stepped tang, inner receiver ring, and full sling ferrules front and back.

The 1942 is very clean, proof marks on wood everywhere, non counterbore (best bullet test), and the trigger seems more tighter than the 40'.(maybe less Cosmo?)

I narrowed it down to 2, but 2 different stores. 50 miles north plus bridge toll for the 40' Tula or 40 miles south for 42' with the best barrel test?

    Thanks in advance!

Where are you located? 50 miles seems far to drive. I am sure there is a calgunner closer by with one for sale.

Price being equal. take the one with the better bore and trigger.

Easy. Buy them both. The Mosin is still the best bargain in a big bore rifle you are going to find. Two of them would still cost less than a low end Savage or Remington bolt gun, not to mention cheap and plentiful Mosin ammo.

40 Tula is harder to find if that matters to you.

So I just purchased a mosin 91/30 for Black Friday! I'm so excited! It's in jail for 11 days (big5 policy says 11 days) and I went for a 39' izhvesk instead!

The bore on the Tula 40' was way too counter bored, so I ask to see the 4 others. 1 was a 41' izhvesk mismatched/refurbished everything, and 2 43's and then the 39'. The 39' passed the bullet test way better than any of the 43's and 41'!
So I took the 39' with out the doubt!

The only refurbished parts on the 39' were the magazine plate, and stock. (Maybe the butt plate too, it was electro penciled but no other numbers were crossed out? Replacement maybe?)

The magazine plate was crossed out and re stamped (I'm guessing forced matched) and the stock was incorrect (I believe it's supposed to have brass on both ends of the upper HG and the stock was incorrect with out flat screws on the front sling loop, and a regueld bottom rear stock piece)

It has a stepped rear tang, inner receiver ring, and the bore was the tightest of the 5 there. Hopefully it shoots good!

sounds like the 39 was best choice.

i just put a big 5 black Friday mosin in jail also. it is a 1938 TULA. i never let counter boring bother me about buying a mosin. i liked the metal, wood and finish. i will find out if it is counter bored when i take it home. i never get tired of buying big 5 mosins and cleaning them up and looking at them. i think this is about # 10 in the last year. i have traded or sold a few. counting this new purchase i have a PU sniper,1955 Romanian M 44 carbine and a 1928 91-30 Dragoon. my romanian might not be valuable but it is my favorite rifle to shoot.

Is there any place where can I find a correct stock?
