How does ordering from a Century or JG type website work? No C&R here

So I have this dealer in my area who will do an incoming transfer with DROS for $65 and I was wondering what the best way to approach this would be. Do I ask him to order the gun for me(the shop orders an item and then sells it to me) and avoid the incoming transfer fee? Is that possible/do they do that? I have always just stuck to instock items I guess...

You just order it yourself and ship it to the address of the FFL which will handle the transfer.

Make sure the vendor will send it to your dealer. They will want his FFL number, at least.

(the shop orders an item and then sells it to me)
The dealer wants to make profit to keep the lights on. It is rare to find one that charges as little as $65 total on a transfer.

But then I have to pay the transfer fee, let's say I go into a gun shop and they don't have the gun I want but can order it for me, would I still have to pay a transfer fee?

It may not seem like a lot of money to worry about but when you are looking at a $100 Mosin a $40-$100 transfer fee(then DROS) is kind of a big deal.

          oh, a mosin.

          transfer with DROS for $65
Is what you said, and that is a good deal. What you really need is a 03 license so you can buy it shipped to your door or go to big 5 and get one on sale which would make it about $135 out the door.

The rifle doesn't cost much, but fees and ammo do.

Of course you already have a safe.

Maybe it is time to apply for a C&R license?

There's a new gun shop here in San Diego that will do the transfer for $35 which includes DROS.

Doesn't have to be a Mosin although I don't usually see Hex receivers at my Big 5 for $109-$119 it could be a $300 SKS, $500 whatever.

I guess my question is how have you seen them handle this maybe before you had your 03? Would the shop order it for you(getting a dealer discount) or do they only do the incoming transfer and charge the transfer fee?

I drove down to SD for my last SKS the 2 trips(down, back, down, back) worth of gas made the SKS not that great of a deal anymore. Gotta love big trucks haha.

You will spend too much money, especially when you consider the price you are paying the dealer for each transaction is less than the price you will pay for 3 years worth of C&R FFL.

If you reload, the discounts from Grafs (and to a lesser extent Midway) will more than cover the cost of the license, and Brownells has discounts as well.

One way or another, you have to pay the shop getting you the gun, whether they resell it or just transfer it. Ask them. $35 goes to the state, the rest is negotiable. I don't know if there is a difference to the FFL which way he takes it in and sends it out, or if paperwork is more complicated.

That will work for J&G if the FFL supplies his info, but you have to have an FFL on file (01 or 03, maybe others) to order a gun from Century. Local FFL could order from Century with his FFL.

A C&R license is $30 for three years...

HAHA... that's just the initial cost. My C&R has cost me tens of thousands over the years. I could actually be living indoors if it wasn't for this damn 03FFL

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.
