    Pietta 1861 Navy Co

    Greetings -

A member of another forum referred me here.

Well i am getting a black powder revolver 1861 navy by Pietta for shooting and historical reasons. Originally i was going to get a 1851 navy by pietta but i decided to start with 1861 navy!

Down the line i would like to convert this to alternately be able to use 38lc cowboy rounds by using a Kirst semi-drop-in gated cylinder where i have to have the recoil shield drilled out a bit to allow cartridges - for cowboy shooting. They gated cylinder can be interchanged with the cap and ball cylinder once this is done.

This is not a problem in CA? Does it have to be registered?

Thanks for you help - and apologies if this is the wrong forum for this question.

      Welcome!

What you propose is no problem whatsoever in California. It does not have to be registered.

There is some question as to if you bought the gun and conversion cylinder via private party sale, and the seller hands you the gun with the conversion installed as to exactly what is supposed to happen (experts please correct me if I'm wrong!). But if you're buying the black powder gun, and then later (aka two different handshakes?) add a conversion cylinder to that black powder gun, for certain no registration or DROS is required. If buying from a retailer, again no registration or DROS required as the gun and conversion cylinder will ship as two distinct items.
