    Cosmoline on sling

What do you guys use to get cosmoline off of cloth slings like the Mosin Nagant type?

For my mosin sling, I took a 5 gallon bucket and poured steaming hot water into it. Then I soaked the sling for about 10 minutes or so, pulled it out and took a wire brush to it. Let it soak another 10 minutes or so than dried it out. It was perfect after that.

The heat is really the enemy of the cosmoline here, so make sure the water is really hot.

I used dish soap, Dawn. I scrubbed it with a hand scrubber brush then allowed it to soak for a few hours in the suds than rinsed it thoroughly. I then repeated the process several times.

        Lather, rinse, repeat.

Plain hot water will work wonders. Cosmoline melts at a relatively low point, 110-125 degrees, rinsing it in hot water will do the trick. No need for soap or any other kind of solvent.

Hit it with the blow dryer or hot air gun first to get the bulk off. Then use hot water for the remainder if necessary.

Steam also works well. I bought a small travel size clothes steamer. It can be directed\aimed and its ready in 15 seconds vs waiting for a pot to boil.
