    Cleaning rust inside Mosin barrel?

Any tips? I think I see some corrosion in the Mosin . Yes I shoot surplus out of it. No I didn't clean it after the first and ONLY range trip of <30 rounds, I thought it was hot enough and not humid in the weather to worry about it, but boy I was wrong. I ended up letting it sit for at least 3 weeks, and boy it kills me to see brown stuff coming out with the patches I run through the barrel.

    Any tips?

Should I worry about the rust possibly opening up the barrel diameter a bit more and loss of accuracy?

    Thank you in advance.

You can plug the muzzle end and fill the barrel with http://www.evaporust.com/ I use this product from time to time. It works great. Bio-friendly, does not stink and it you can use your bare hands.

I did the same thing with a nice Romanian SKS, stupid gas piston froze in the tube and there was a science project growing in the barrel. It cleaned up fine but what a disaster...

One magazine worth of corrosive cartridges and a few hours is all it takes to start rusting if the salts are not removed and water is present.

All you can do now is scrub the hell out of it, make sure you flush it with water to remove any remaining salts. Oil or grease it for storage

I dont know that it will change barrel dia but it can certainly be on its way to developing rust pitting.

Plug the end and pour some CLR down the barrel, making sure it gets into the chamber. Did that on my Mosin after someone left it for 4 months without cleaning after shooting corrosive, put a nice sheen on the inside after a few run through's with a brush

Next time you shoot corrosive ammo, just pour/spray some water down the barrel (from the receiver end, so it comes out the muzzle) while you're at the range and the barrel is still hot. It'll rinse out the corrosive salts and evaporates almost instantly. Then you can afford to wait a few hours, or even until the next day to do a real cleaning/oiling.

Some people use windex but water works just fine, those salts are soluble in plain old water as far as I know.

If there is rust, the bore sheen/brightness is probably gone. What works for me is a 3 step process. 1. a wire cleaning brush with auto rubbing compound, dip the the brush in the compound. Don't forget to use a small rag to plug up receiver/chamber as you don't want this crud to seep where it shouldn't. After 15-20 passes, mop up the crud. 2. Use a polishing compound (fine grit) with the wire brush 3. Mop/polish with the polishing compound. Again, each step will also take quite a few passes. Not only will you clean off the rust, but restore the brilliance of the bore.
