    Whats wrong with this picture?

My son and I took our Mosin Nagants out to the range today and his was not extracting the spent casings. So we pulled the bolt and noticed he was missing a part of his. bolt.jpg

Probably put about 100 rounds through it before it stopped extracting. After he used the rod to get out his second casing we pulled the bolt and compared it to mine and it was real obvious what was wrong. Looks like it is only a $15 fix. Told him to buy 2.

Almost looks like rust or corrosion (reddish) on the part of the extractor closest to the groove, a victim of corrosive ammo perhaps??

Looks like it will be a $23 fix. You can buy a bolt head for $15 without an extractor and $23 with. Anybody else broke one of these on their mosin should I go ahead and get one for myself or is this kinda of a rare.

Wow, this is the first time I've seen a broken extractor on a Mosin.

Dang Russian crap breaks after only couple hundred thousand rounds...
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.

Tis better to have Trolled & lost, Than to never have Trolled, at all.

Ken, You don't need a bolt head, just the extractor, and they're easy to change out. Most times when a Mosin extractor breaks, it's really old, or it's on a refurbed rifle, and it wasn't fit finished. And that doesn't take much either, some fine grit wet/dry paper to take the sharp edges off.
Mosins are a "push feed", vs the "controlled feed" of a Mauser. That means the extractor has to push over the lip of the rimmed round. Look at the bottom of a Mosin round, the edge of the rim is beveled to assist in that process.
Make the area of the extractor that slides up and over on that bevel, nice and smooth. It will chamber a round better, and less stress on the extractor.
Give the chamber, lug recess, and extractor cut in the barrel a good cleaning too, the easier the case extracts, even less strain on the extractor.
If that's all Russian to you, or you're not sure about doing it, bring it by and I'll do it for you, take about 15-20 minutes.

It happened to my mosin after about 50 rounds. My understanding is that some of the extractors saw heavy use and were weakened. When you combine that with using a laquer coated case (generally green) it builds up between the extractor and bolt and eventually weakens it enough to snap it off.

Your can order the extractor online but generally you can find these easy at the gun show in the mosin parts pile for $15
