I escaped with my wallet. (Barely)

I hit my favorite gun store today to get the firing pin on a new (to me) shotgun replaced. This is the same store that I go into a couple times a year to help the gunsmith identify his oddballs. He had a large consignment of long guns that came in from a wealthy client who seems to be going through a divorce. This guy had some seriously cool stuff. Several Garands, including an M1C and an M1D that was still in the box, according to the gunsmith. I didn't get to see those, as they were still packed away. But he did have some other items that were very, very cool. There was a Vz 52/57 in near mint condition. And a MAS 49/56 that was nearly as good. And to top everything off, there was a heavily engraved Pre-WWII German Drilling in 16ga x 16ga x .30-30. That thing was sweet. If I had the funds, I would snag it in a heartbeat. But alas, he didn't even know where to begin pricing it. I told him that the owner of the collection needs to do some research on it if he wants to get the best price, and then I showed him some that were lesser quality, and in odd calibers on gunbroker going for $1500-4000. He had been thinking it was in the $800-1000 range, and was going to price it like a nice double barrel.

I'll head back there in a week or so to see the stuff that was still boxed up. I love looking at collections like this, because the owner both knew what he was doing with most of it, and had the funds to get some really nice pieces. But I hate the fact that I can't hoard it all. Heck, I doubt I can get more than one or two of the much less expensive pieces. But I still feel like a kid on Christmas morning when I get a call to come look at it all.

Sounds like you stumbled across a treasure trove. I'd snag a Garand, being that I'm American, if it were affordable.

They will never be as cheap as they are today.

Cal Custom in Fallbrook. It is a little hole in the wall shop north of San Diego. He is only open Wed-Sat. And for God's sake, don't mention ANYTHING about ARs, bullet buttons, or anything that vaguely sounds like it is getting around the AWB. He will flip out if you even breath a word about 80% lowers. Just grin and nod, and avoid the topic. He is in his 80s, and I have tried for years to get him to see the light on that one. It ain't gonna happen. But he builds very nice Garands and 1911s, so I just go there for the old guns.

I told him it was likely worth between $350-500. It looked like it was brand new. I have no idea what he will actually price it at. I only supply information to him. You can call and see though.
