Better pics added early 1900's mauser sporter challenge. Super pretty take a look

So I recently picked this sporter up. I know its made by Hermann Weihrauch in Germany then sent to Europe where it came to the US after WW2. There is 5,6 on the barrel that I suspect is the caliber but not sure. Any info would be cool. It is a 22 cal barrel but the chamber is huge. I will have it cast before shooting but if anyone can figure the stamps out please lmk. I may end up putting a scope back on this has anyone personaly had this done or even better done the fitting themselves.

I cant get this picture to resize larger but it says 5,6 then serial. The markings behind it are for hermann.

I can take more pics but theres no other stamps that I can see.

First order of business is a chamber cast, then slug the bore. It could anything from a 5.6x52R to a 5.6x61 VHSE.
The only one I would trust to do a claw mount scope right:

That is one nice rifle! It needs a period scope on it, anything else would be sacrilege!

$800 for some rings, any ideas on how much a scopes gonna cost? That's a lot of money to put into an old rifle.

Yes! I appreciate your help a lot! Its very nice to have someone like you to call before making purchases like this.

She came with the 1938 243 K98 thats matching down to the action screws never been sanded or touched. The only thing that doesnt match is firing pin and floor plate is not numbered. I may make a thread on her later I cant believe all the serials and proofs that are on it. Stock is also serial matched to it. I enjoy the proofs plus serial numbers on the action screws the most. plus its a 38 so it has waffs all over it. I got both for a great deal. I just dont know if the sporter is worth putting a scope back on it. I cant find much info on hermann and I guess its because he wasnt that popular of a builder but his work is beautiful.

They're expensive because they're hand fitted to rifle and scope. It's a shame how many Mauser sporter rifles came back without the scopes.
The last Hermann Weihrauch rifle w/scope I saw sell at auction "started" at $2K.
Contact Mike McCabe in CO, user name is z1r on Mauser Central forums, tell him Trap referred you. He does outstanding work on classic Mausers like yours, and his prices are more reasonable than New England Custom Gun.
He may be able to hook you up with a scope. If not, there are several sellers on ebay that list nothing but vintage euro scopes.
Sarco offers a repro ZF-39 scope that would look good on there too.

If you didn't get that at the Cabela's in Reno, it's twin brother is there. Looks exactly the same, although I don't think that one had a sling, and it was clearly marked 7mmX57.

No, didnt come from cabelas. Trap I don't know much about these old rifles at all. If you get a second could you link me to a non repro scope? The $300 price is easy to swallow but I'd rather put the $300 towards an original. Thanks for the info.

I can't find the one seller that will list about a dozen at a time, but here's a couple. The first one is a deal is someone doesn't snipe it.
The rings will have to fitted to your mounts, on both of these.

Second one has the mounts! I know they need to be fitted but I do play the lotto lol. Thanks. I'm gun poor but I know what I need now thanks. Do you know if all or most of herms rifles had this style of stock? Anyone know why it's common for the scopes to be missing.

About once a month, someone signs up on Mauser Central to ask for an ID on a pre war/post war Mauser sporter. Maybe one out of 20 will have a scope, most are vet bringbacks too. I've never found an answer to that question.
Most of his rifles I've seen had the full length stocks, I've seen a couple with a classic euro style stock. All had double set triggers, butter knife bolt handles, and tasteful engraving.
That first scope would be your best bet. having the mounts fitted to your rifle from the one in the 2nd link would cost prohibitive, and would destroy the value,....besides looking like crap. The 1st scope I linked, is a twin for the style it had on it, and if you can score it for the opening bid, you'd be stealing it.
The work to fit it would be minimal.
Get busy with a chamber cast, the curiosity is killing me!
