C&R Rifle Suggestions

Hello all!

I'm looking for some suggestions for a C&R rifle that I don't already own. I would eventually like to gift it to my brother since he is 18 now and is perfectly legal to own a firearm. I already have my FFL03 so I can find something out of state if need be. I'm open to about any caliber and style of rifle as long as it is a C&R and no more than about $500. Since this would eventually be a gift, I would like to tailor it more to my brother's interests.

Here's what I have already that is over 50 that both myself and my brother have shot -

Mosin Nagant 91/30
Mosin Nagant M44
Swiss K31
French MAS-36
We have also shot, but do not own, an 8mm Mauser and an SKS.

Bigger calibers as you can see, which is why I'm open to about anything. Doesn't matter if it is semi-auto or bolt action. However, I am not wanting an M1 Garand right now. A 1903A3 would be my only 30-06 choice. All .22's are open for discussion, as well as lever actions (which he loves). A lever action would be the only exception to my C&R requirement since I know those tend to get fairly pricey as they age of which I would be more than happy to do a PPT on a newer one.

Add a Walther model I or II bolt action and semi 22lr. Don't see any American rifles in your lot, M1????

I eventually want a Garand, but would rather go the whole CMP route and avoid the $1000+ gun show versions unless I find a killer deal on here. Not a rush for the most part.

The Remington 11-48 is a great C&R semi-auto shotgun.

There are lots of possibilities. I think any C+R collection should have a K98 and some version of the Lee Enfield like No.4 Mk2.

I would go cruise gunbroker. And don't forget that C&Rs don't have to be milsurps. In addition to the shotguns mentioned above, there are usually tons of old .22s and old centerfire hunting rifles on there. Pump action, bolt action, break top, you name it, you can normally find it. I usually pick up shotguns on there in the $100-150 range. Good older name brand rifles for $200-250ish. It is just a matter of timing and luck.

Precisely why I posted this thread! I love milsurps, but it doesn't have to necessarily be one that I purchase next. I've come across plenty of other C&R guns at shows. Heck, the only .22 rifle I own is was made in 1968. Not C&R yet, but you get my point. I think I'm more trying to find a rifle of any caliber that I have overlooked in the sea of milsurps that has a good reputation.

To those that mentioned the SKS, it's the next gun on my military rifle list. 7.62x39 is one of my favorite calibers.

I'm not in a rush to buy anything. I like to research the death out of what catches my eye before I decide to pursue a purchase. The suggestions already are great! That Rem 11-48 might become my first shotgun down the road.

I absolutely love old hunting rifles. It is just a matter of finding ones that fit my budget. Remington made some very interesting ones. Their Models 14 and 141 were slide-action guns that used .30-30 class Remington cartridges. The Models 8 and 81 were semi-autos that were made in the same cartridges and .300 savage too. The Savage Model 99 lever action was THE American deer rifle for almost half a century. And there are more bolt guns than you can shake a stick at. The main thing to do is to do your research before you buy. They had lemons back then, the same as we do now. And you have to make sure that you aren't getting the 1940's equivalent of the Remington 710 before you spend money on it. Or find out that it was know for breaking a specific part that is no longer available. But there are plenty of old guns out there that still have factory made ammunition readily available. Take your time and don't be afraid to put in a low bid on something once in a while. Every so often, you end up being the only bidder, and can get a good firearm for a song.

Excellent information! I've had a GB account for a while and regularly searched it when I was looking for a K31. I'll keep doing my research on there as well. I'm definitely a lover of old firearms. There is absolutely nothing wrong with new (my pistols are new), it's just the old stuff likes to tug at me for historical reasons and the fact that some designs haven't changed dramatically in the last century.
