My 03A3 memory is a little fuzzy, but it looks like except for the sights, all the parts in the gun could have been made by Remington. The only thing that I can't tell is the bolt. On the underside of the bolt handle, there should be a stamped letter. If it's an "R," then it's a Remington bolt. If it's an "X" or if there's nothing stamped there, then it's a Smith-Corona bolt.

The buttplate and magazine cover look like they're Remington (they won't be marked as such. Remington's checkering on the buttplate is finer than on a S-C, and the front of the Remington magazine cover is square behind the bolt, where the S-C is curved).

It looks like the rifle was manufactured in 1942.

      Serial numbers for 1942:
      1942‑3000001‑3348085 (M1903)
      1942‑3348086‑3607999 (M1903A3)
      1942‑3708000‑4707999 (M1903A3)
      1942‑4992001‑5784000 (M1903A3)

Not sure what your rifle is worth but Atlantic Firearms has some that have been rebuilt with a new Criterion barrel for $789, Centerfire Systems has some rebuilt ones with a new barrel for $750. At least that might give you a starting point for a reference of the value. Even if yours is worth less, I like yours better because it has a personal story behind it.

Made 1942. I'd value it around $500. It has been rebarreled (1-44 barrel) and it looks refinished to me. Still, a nice shooter with family history.

Nice Heirloom piece, especially since your Grandfather competed with it.
Did you get any old scorecards/targets/paperwork?
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.

Tis better to have Trolled & lost, Than to never have Trolled, at all.

With a 44 tube it will be a 2 groove. Nice scant stock. Too bad it is DT.

I like and collect 1903 based target rifles and have several similar to yours...

              A Remington 1903

              A Springfield 1903

              And a Rock Island 1903

As I said, I love these rifles, but the plain truth is that they are no longer competitive in High Power matches and have a limited appeal to target shooters. And because they have target sights, they aren't allowed in vintage matches.

IMO, these rifles are worth about $450 with a good barrel.
