    Are newer muzzleloaders considered C&R?

I'm thinking about buying a muzzleloader from a gun store online, and I'm wondering if the newer muzzleloaders are considered curio & relics for purposes of transferring them. Basically what asking is...do I need a FFL if I'm buying a muzzleloader?

Any information/advice will be greatly appreciated.

New reproduction and/or other types of muzzle loaders are not curio-relic firearms. You do not need a ffl to buy.

So let's say I'm buying a muzzle loader from a gun store in another state, can they just mail it directly to my house?

Yes, right to your house. No FFL needed. They are not C&R. The feds don't consider them to be firearms. California does consider them to be firearms but exempts them from California's dealer transfer requirement.

Yes. And you must also be at least 18 years of age.
You can buy muzzle-loaders straight from places like Cabelas, Midway, etc

Any recomendations as far as brand, iron sights vs. scope, etc.

I'm a newbie when it comes to muzzle loaders.

Absolutely depends on what you want to do with it and what your interests are.
If your goal is to extend you hunting season, consider a modern in-line.
If you fancy yourself something of a mountain man, one of the many Hawken types available. (I and many here recommend the Lyman Great Plains).

NOTE: This goes for bp pistols as well! I had one shipped from Cabelas right to my house. Sure it's bp, but it's just kind of cool to do that just to say you had one shipped to your house! Then you are halfway to finding out something else. That which must not be spoken.

I believe that the modern, "in-line" designs that use modern primers instead of the old percussion caps are considered to be a firearm and have to be DROS'ed through an FFL dealer.

I know some use Remington 700 receivers. Those are absolutely firearms and must be dros'd

Back in the 1990s ATF came to the determination that modern in-line muzzle loaders that use modern primers were firearms. But then in 1998 Congress changed the wording of "antique" in the Gun Control Act to specify that modern in-line muzzle loaders designed for black powder or black powder substitute were indeed antiques as long as they couldn't fire fixed ammunition.

Yep. ATF still considers in-line muzzle loaders built on actual firearm frames to be firearms.

Here's a link to the PDF of the ATF newsletter that discusses the issue...
