CMP Garand/03A3 Clinic in Ojai 9/30.

We are getting ready for the clinic tomorrow which should fulfill the marksmanship requirement for the CMP. Rifles are zeroed for a 6 o' clock at 100, cleaned, greased and oiled. Picking up new glasses this morning and I am pretty excited. Can anyone offer any pointers about shooting standing?

Off hand shooting is the hardest to do. It's all about being relaxed and balanced, plus breathing. You can't use your sling in competition so don't get into the habit of trying to use it while standing. Here's an article about it from CMP. Good luck and have fun.
The May 2008 issue of On The Mark, the CMP's newsletter for junior shooters, has a feature by Gary Anderson on building the proper standing position. Though focused primarily on juniors, all 3P High Power, Service Rifle, and Silhouette shooters can benefit from this article. CLICK HERE to Download Newsletter as .

It seem quite funny to me that they can wear those shooting jackets and gloves but they won't let you use the sling. The guys that first used those weapons to protect this country didn't have the advantage of shooting jackets.

Remember, you get 1 minute per shot in standing slow fire so take your time. After your shot, you can rest the butt of the unloaded rifle on a chair or stool to catch a breather. I give myself an 8 second breather since you would be waiting for the guy in the pit to mark the target in a real match anyways. This is assuming you are shooting a 100 yard reduced course.

If you are shooting at 200 yards, you are allowed to take your sighter shots from prone or sitting so if you do not trust your standing position that much, shoot the sighters from a different position to get your 200 yard zero.

Best piece of advice I've gotten was from Tom Temple (he may be at your clinic), who said "You know what a good sight picture is, so if you don't have a good sight picture, why are you pressing the trigger?" Or something like that.

          Good luck and have fun!

I have to say that Sunday's clinic was the best range day I have had in as long as I can remember. The gentlemen running the clinic were outstanding, the coaches were patient and very thorough. For anyone who has never shot a match and is interested, you need to go to one of these. I felt like I learned more in a few hours there than I have in years shooting from the bench. I need tons of practice...
