Another help ID this old rifle thread

I know its a Japanese rifle from WW2. Stamped with 三八式 (38shiki) on the top. Sorry for the ****ty pictures, took them with my phone. A .223 was a little loose in the barrel. 7.62 was too big.

Still dry fires and I don't see any rust anywhere. Going to clean it up in a bit and get some oil on it.

The markings on the left of receiver will tell you the arsenal and series

Asking my step dad about it. He's had it in the garage just sitting there for a few years. I told him i'd clean it up and get some oil on it so it wouldnt rust.

Do you know if it has been fired at all?

Be sure to check around the "mum" for any drill holes that might go all the way through and if the inside of the magazine looks like it has been made roughly, if so that is a good indicator that it is a drill rifle and is NOT SAFE TO FIRE.

No idea. No drill holes that I can see. Just took a flashlight and looked through everything a bit closer. Its really really clean and the rifling looks great.

Hmmm sounds good, but one more indicator would be if the magazine looks real rough, as in made rough or cheaply. That usually means it is a drill rifle.

Other than that you got yourself a nice Arisaka.

Found this info on the net:

At various times, rifles were removed from military service and sold to other countries or transferred to Japanese schools as training weapons. Normally, the chrysanthemum on these rifles was overstamped with the Koishikawa (Tokyo) / Kokura Arsenal symbol or a ring of small circles to indicate that the rifle no longer belonged to the Imperial Japanese Army. Rifles given to schools often have an additional character stamped on the top of the receiver between the chrysanthemum and the type designation characters. Most of these "school-marked" rifles also have two or three zeros preceeding the serial number. The "school" mark looks something like this:

That is true, but not for all, especially late in the war. I have seen rifles that look fine as standard issue, but when inspected closely it is a no go.

But I am sure it is fine.
