After owning several rifles and shotguns, I am finally looking into getting my first handgun when I turn 21 this December. I have had the pleasure of shooting many different handguns, and I honestly have fallen in love with the 1911(like everyone else, I know.) I am conflicted, however, since I have also wanted a Garand for the longest time. I only plan on buying one more firearm for a while now and just wanted advice on which would be the wiser choice. It would be a service grade M1 against an American made 1911 in the same price range. I want both equally as bad as the other, and would use them for the same thing. Thanks for any advice.

CMP Garand vs. 1911

My off the cuff thinking is to get the Garand first. Companies are going to be making 1911s for years to come (though I guess it's a little more speculative how long the American made brands will remain American made), but CMP's supply of Garands is finite.
Statements I make on this forum should not be construed as giving legal advice or forming an attorney-client relationship. -
M1. The 1911 will be around for a ling time to come, the CMP won't have garands forever.Originally posted by GoodEyeSniperMy neighbors think I'm a construction worker named Bruce.

How much can you afford to feed them? It will be harder to get a M1 on down the road someday, but they can be pricey to feed. If your goal is just getting one while you can, get the M1. If you want to put 100s of rounds through it, get the 1911.Originally posted by MunkThis is akin to saying that the silver lining of being raped is, "hey, at least you're getting laid."Comment

I'd go with the 1911. Being young, you might prefer the portablity of a 1911. You have to really read up on which 1911 you want. There is a lot of junk on the market; and the good stuff comes dear. The 1911 is going to cost more too - a lot more.Comment

Garands from the CMP are going away within the next year or so. Once the CMP runs out, Garand prices will spike and there are a lot of mixmasters that are of questionable construction on the market. Without a doubt, get a Garand asap. While you are at it, pick up a few cans of HXP, .50 per round, cheapest .30-06 you are going to find, shoot 'em all, save that good HXP brass, perfect excuse to get into reloading. Then you can have .30-06 for .20 per round.
1911 market seems to be pretty stable, there are plenty of them out there.NRA Certified Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor, Shotgun Instructor and Range Safety Officer

GARAND! Sorry for shouting, too much coffee this morning. I believe, and guys correct me if I am wrong, but the historical pieces of the 1911 are available through online (ie gunbroker) and independent gun shops. Thus, prices are already adjusted in the low inventory. As said before, the newer stuff will be made forever....always high in demand. That said, Garands in still plentiful for now...but not much longer and inevitably you will be sitting on an appreciating investment.Comment

SARCOs lateset Shotgun New ads ( yeah I know its SARCO but they have the product)
Says they they have a new shipment of Argentine 1911's, Systema Model 1927, and the Ballister Molina (ballerina molester as some call them). These are in various degress of condition but seem to be the first imports of these in many years. The M1927 original finish would have been blued not parked, some have been parked. The Ballister Molinas parts do not interchange with the 1911A1 Colts or Systemas Model 1927. Auction price on the Model 1927 is north of $600 now. I did get an Argentine holster for my Model from Sarco, they are already out of the lower grade ones.
Get the Garand preferably from CMP, ammo and THEN get the 1911A1, modern or C&R did you mention what you were looking for in a 1911A1?Comment
