I would put it's trade value at about $250. It has the stamped slide, so you can argue that in your favor to get the price down. Universals aren't all junk. But many of these stamped slide ones have had issues. As part of a trade, it is worth your time for that price. To buy it outright, not so much. I have one that has a milled slide like the old GI versions. It works just fine.

don't buy it. Get an inland or underwood. Those will be very collectible.

In addition to not being "genuine", some of them had functional problems that were annoying at best and unsafe at worst.

Here is the real issue. The slides of these rifles were notorious for breaking. There are ZERO replacement slides available anywhere. If the slide breaks you have a $350.00 paper weight.

Real Govt issue carbines are available for around $600 plus. Their real advantage is they have actual value as a collectable and they have a huge supply of spare parts available.

Save your $$$ up and buy a real M-1 carbine which is an actual investment in addition to being a usable rifle.

              What SVT-40 said.

I once heard one of the more problematic transmissions used in Jeeps ( JEEP stands for J-ust E-mpty E-very P-ocket, but I do love 'em!) in the later 1980's - early 90's era as " a hand grenade with the pin removed, and the handle held down with a piece of very old scotch tape."

When ever I think of late Universals, this same simple yet eloquent description comes to mind.

I just got in the mail the Sept. 20th issue of "Shotgun News". There is a real good article on the M1 Carbine. Check it out. You can also buy SGN at the news stand.

I would pay no more than 200.00,maybe not even that. If I wanted a aftermarket Carbine that is. I say do as the others have said. Buy a USGI one. There are ten differant makers to choose from and Inland would be the most economical as they are a very common maker. It really is a piece of junk. Some of the very early aftermarket ones used mostly USGI parts and they were not "as bad".

I would pass on it unless it was really really cheap.
