    Truly Remarkable Bore Solvent

    Hi All,

I had heard good stuff about Hoppe's Benchrest. I went to the Big R and they didn't have any... but they had "Truly Remarkable Bore Solvent" by Tipton.

I have to say that stuff took out gunk in the bore of the Mosin that was probably there since WWII! It's really never been this clean. When I got it I went through hundreds of patches as well as a can or two of foaming bore cleaner designed to remove copper. It worked decently, and didn't stink.

However, it looks like it missed a bunch of stuff this ammonia-based solvent found.

Being my first ammonia-based solvent, however, I got to see the effects in an enclosed space. I'm sort of fuzzy-brained and sitting by an open window typing this. Won't be using that stuff indoors again.

As an afterthought, I stopped by Dunham's on the way home for a new brass jag (probably should find a nickel one) and a new brush to get into some spots I'd been having trouble with. They have their regular 91/30 rifles priced at $170 now, with the laminate-stocked rifles at nearly $200!

I think maybe the folks at Dunham's have been hitting the crack pipe again. There are still plenty of Mosins being imported, so far as I know!

I found that brake cleaner works better than any solvent I have tried and is much cheaper to boot ($1-$2 a can). Plus it evaporates and when you add boiled water down the tube (which also evaporates) you are left with a stripped and totally cleaned barrel that just needs some oil. I have tried lots from the uber expensive to the run of the mill and nothing beats break cleaner plus boiling water.

I remember when I cleaned my first rifle like this too and found a shinny bore under what I thought was a dark bore. Boy was I excited! It is a nice treat and that cosmoline sure dose a good job of shielding that pristine barrel that many have hiding underneath that layer of "dark". It is like a hidden treasure .

I almost bought some of Tipton's solvent the other day. I'm a huge fan of their cleaning rods, jags and stuff. I had some of the Hoppe's Benchrest and was not impressed.

Instead of the Tipton stuff I ended up trying some Boretech Eliminator. Very impressive product. No ammonia, no smell. Hands down the best copper solvent I have ever used. After using it a couple times on four rifles and two handguns I emailed Boretech to ask some questions about their other products, and to say thanks.

Eliminators only downfall that I see is it's lack of ability to remove lead. Best thing I've found for that is Kroil. Boretech does have some stuff for lead called Rimfire Blend. I've yet to try it, some is on it's way.
