    kentucky rifle kit

I was thinking of getting one of these Traditions kentucky rifle DIY kits. Sportsmans guide says they cannot ship to CA. Is this legal? or is it just this shop?

Just the shop. Muzzle loading black powder guns are legal to mail to CA.

Traditions are good. Lyman Great Plains .50 cal. percussion is even better. All in all Sportsmans guide sucks.

Look for an older Lyman or a T/C. Tho the current Lyman sold at Cabelas is a sweet rifle.

Sportsmans Guide is anti-california. Have you tried Dixie Gun Works?

Cabela's is good but, over priced. Shop around.

Have you looked on gunbroker? You can usually get good deals on muzzleloaders on there.

Look into a Jim Chambers kit. Much better quality that those named above.

There is nothing as rewarding as DIY on one of these. There are far better kits than Traditions though. If you can afford one from Track of the Wolf, Jim Chambers, Peccatonica or Sitting Fox you will have a very fine rifle for not much more than the Traditions kit. And it will be much closer in all respects to an original. These kits start at around $500 ad go up. But you will end up with something you can enjoy much more than an Indian or Italian replica. Remember that the biggest investment in this is your time so may as well do it right the first time.

Thanks guys. Ended up getting the traditions kit(early xmas present from the wife) I plan on going for a bit of a used look on this one just in case I screw up. Was gonna blue or brown the barrel but I've seen a few originals that have a darker finish on the wood and an untreated barrel and they look really nice.

Don't use Sportsman's Guide, they blow, and are anti-CA. Dixie Gun Works is far better.

Edit: looks like OP has what he wants, so nvm.
