Ah ****, did I just ruin my ammo?

Keeping a long story short, some of my mosin ammo took a bath in Hoppes no. 9 for probably a few hours.

Is it still safe to shoot? Will it even fire at all?

Hoppes is highly penetrating... as you know. Likely the primers are fouled. But, perhaps not -- mil ammo sometimes has a sealant.

Is it safe?? -- depends on you paying close attention when you shoot it. If you get a squib -- STOP shooting and check the barrel.

      Frankly, I'd not risk it.

So, why did you soak it in Hoppes?

just throw it out. A few bucks worth of ammo is not worth screwing up your gun or you

I have an old brief case that I usually take to the range and keep my ammo in, well it also had a bottle of Hoppes no. 9 in there and somehow the lid became loose and dumped most of its contents all over the ammo.

Also its commercial stuff, not surplus ammo

I'm guessing you were trying to save time by shooting ammo that automatically applies a layer of hoppes to the bore? Good thinking!!

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

So if one of the round is a squib, how easy is it to get the stuck round out? How badly does it damage the bore?

You use a cleaning rod and drive the bullet out. The risk is: You will not notice the squib; crank the bolt; and fire another round with disastrous results.

Better safe then sorry. Dump the ammo and buy a crate of milsurp. You can regret what happened, and the money lost, everytime you go to the range and safely shoot your rifle.

if you don't want it, i will take it and shoot it for you. some ammo has a laquer or other sealant. try 1 round and see it it is a ok with your gun. if not i will take the rest.

Shoot a round, check for a hole in the target -- no hole in target, check the bore for a stuck bullet --
It is not nuclear science --
Or - just pull the bullets and reload -
Or - like the doomsdayers say -- get rid of it
