    Reference for M1 Garand

I just picked up a Springfield M1 Garand, but I don't know a whole lot about it. I don't know if I over paid or if I got a good deal. I did check the serial and it said a manufacture date on 1944. The barrel says S-A-10-41. I was told that it might need to be re-barreled but wasn't told about wear on barrel.

Check out the CMP web site. It will give you a frame of reference on price and has lots of good information.

Should have asked these questions before you bought it
If the whole rifle is correct for 1941 , even if the barrel is bad it has a good collector value
If a mixmaster and barrel is wore out its a $450- $500 Garand

If you do replace the barrel, it still has collector value as there weren't that many produced in '41 (under 300,000), and most went off to war soon after.

Shoot it before you pass judgement on the barrel-you may be pleasantly surprised.

I have the rifle for your barrel, mine was made 12/41 (pearl harbor). Mine went thru a post war rebuild and now sports a 47 barrell. I wont change it though as it shoots like a laser.
