hey everyone I was out in west palm beach florida this weekend and saw an M38 for 250. Is this a good price for an M38? I never see them that much and was considering using the C&R to get it.

That's a reasonable price for a nice, original gun. Numbers match? Correct M38, not M44, stock?Because milsurp.Comment

I didnt look at the numbers but I believe he said they all matched. The stock didnt have the cutout for a bayo so I would assume that its the correct stock but im not experienced in telling if a stock is legit.
thanks guys for the responses. I really want a m38.Originally posted by Scuba Steve33Indeed. I'm on the Mosin dick after picking up my first one recently.

$250 sounds ok to me, since I spent more than twice that much on the last M38 I bought

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

$250 is good if the bore is good. I lucked out and got mine at the end of the common availability days and scored one with a perfect shiny bore for about $180 or so and that was years ago. If you can have him take a picture with a bullet tip sticking in the barrel tip-that would be your best indicator and that is how I judge any C&R rifle (The less that goes in the better). You can do the same with any MN rifle for that matter. My tube was new, barely went in and it shoots like a champ. I can get head shots all day at 100 yards with iron sights. If you're looking for a shooter that is the best test.
Collectability/rarity is a whole different matter.
FYI, another fella is selling one in the private firearm sales section for the same price. Maybe you could have him leave out the "extras" and get a lower price and just replace the rear sight for like $7. Sticky bolt is just from not doing a good enough cleaning and re oiling job. Brake cleaner, boil, break cleaner, boil the bolt and then re-oil well (ballistol then rem oil) and you will have the smoothest action ever. I do that to all of mine and they are butter. If you do go that route you may see some black on the bolts after boiling but that will go away after you oil it well and stick it in a bag.Comment

noob question, now the bullet you put in the top of the bore its a mosin bullet? sounds crazy but i have never heard of this method and want to be sure.$250 is good if the bore is good. It is just a field expedient way of checking for muzzle wear. Likely, it would be more helpful if you were comparing several rifles side by side.
You insert the bullet backwards, tip first, into the muzzle to see how far it goes and how snug it is, to gauge muzzle wear.
Note that 7.62x54 is .310, and most American 30 cals are .308.Comment
