    New C&R Question

I just recently recieved my C&R license and had a simple question. My paperwork says to keep a book with all transactions noted. I've seen reference to keeping a bound book in different threads. Just to make sure I don't make a 'rookie error' what exactly are they asking for...certain type of notebook?
Great forum. Thanks for the help.

It doesn't have to be a particular type of notebook. I just use a 3-ring notebook with sheet protectors in it holding my bound book pages.I also keep a copy of the other person's licence in the back (medium sized stack in a sheet protector). There are a couple of free PDF/Excel versions of a bound book page floating around on the web. Pick one you like or create your own.

I put the whole thing on the top shelf of the safe on top of some ammo.

Thanks RaceDay. I searched the web and found a pdf file at the following location: [URL="http://www.surplusrifle.com/graphics/boundbookpage.pdf"]
      Great site for C&R information.

      Thanks again.

        easy stuff works best

Any book that protects the information will do. You are doing it to PROTECT your butt...so treat it as such.

Do you keep the bound book with your rifles? Or do you keep it some other place safe and protected. I was concerned with keeping it around the rifles it had logged in it. What if the rifles or book are stolen? Don't you need to be able to cross reference your book with your actual inventory if something like that happens?

You are required to keep your bound book at your licensed premises, but you don't have to keep it right next to your collection.

You should have another firearms inventory method to keep track of all of your firearms (C&R and modern) for insurance or theft reporting purposes anyway. This is not required by law and you can make up any system you want. You can always use it to fall back on if your bound book gets lost or stolen.

              Hey, guys -

To me, a "bound" book is one whose pages are captive to the spine, like hardcovers. It would make more sense that this is what the BATFE people would want, since it's much harder to remove a page from such a book without it being noticed.

I'm not trying to be overly pedantic, but for those who really want to dot the Is, this might be what the rulemakers want...

Here is the BATF definition, from their FAQ section on their web site.:

                What is a "bound book?"

A "bound book" is a permanently bound book or an orderly arrangement of loose-leaf pages which must be maintained on the business premises. The format must follow that prescribed in the regulations, and the pages must be numbered consecutively.

                [27 CFR 478.121 and 478.125]

Oh, OK...thanks for the reference. Interesting definition of "bound" they have, but...considering who we're talking about, maybe not...

yeah, if you know where to get a 'bound' book I'd rather use that. I just couldn't find one that had pre-printed pages.

Brownells sell the "store bought" version of the bound book that most FFL's use...

                        Hey JAYRAD,
I purchased a Firearms Collectors Log Book from the Book Factory www.bookfactory.com. Item LOG-072-GUNCOLL-XKR. It is a hardbound book with all the needed transaction information and a spot for a 4" x 6" photo on each page. For a few bucks extra they even imprinted my name on the cover. Go to the site and take a look.
