    8X57 from 30-06

I know this is a reloading thing but also a Milsurp thing.
Been reloading for about 20 years, however I Just made my first handloads
of 8mm Mauser. Formed the cases from FC once fired 30-06 cases in
Redding 8X57 dies. Only made a few to see how they do.

Once fired FC cases from my 03A3

      Why not ?
If thick neck is an issue, which I doubt, that is what neck reamers or outside neck turners are for --

Because I have lots of 06 brass and no 8x57 brass and two
        hungry Mausers to feed.
I forget neck thickness, will measure the next ones, thickness is not an issue as the feed in the chamber just fine

I've been making 8x57 out of '06 brass for years. One pass with the 8mm sizer, mini tubing cutter to get the length close and finish up with the case trimmer.
            Nothing else needed...

I've done a few, it works great. Every now and again I get one that won't chamber, I think they need some material taken off the neck (haven't got around to that yet). I also like to anneal the necks, cheap insurance for the time invested in making them.

Because you can find .30-06 brass at any store that sells reloading gear. 8x57 not so much.

Yeah I am guilty of cross pollinating C&R with Reloading. Seems to have worked out pretty well. I think the crossing is valid and good. Quite a few of us do far more than collect. I believe we can have a ton of fun mixing the art of reloading (which goes hand in hand with "obsolete cartridges") and C&R shooting. Maybe with an eye on performance as well as cost. Getting our ol guns to shoot better, for less.

I did the same, as I didnt get a .30-06 shooting rifle until about 2 years after I started collecting. Recomend you mark the case head with a paint marker so that you can easily differentiate from actual .30-06 brass.

I have dont this with a few of my Milsurp calibers that are from a distance similar to others. 8mm formed 30-06 is marked with a red strip over the primer to differentiate from regular 30-06, black stripe for .270 formed 7.7 Arisaka, ETC ETC. I also did this with calibers that look similar so I dont need to rely on case head markings. 6.5 Arisaka cases are almost the same length as both .308 and .243 win

This practice has been done for YEARS.

                      You're good.

That would just be silly, then I would have to buy a rifle to shoot it in.
                          Hmmmm, maybe not so silly

What? And be a bubba? .30-06 brass is great for making all kinds of brass for older guns. I have plenty of 8x57, so I have never done that one. But it is very common to do. More so a couple of decades ago when 8mm brass was harder to find. I have used -06 brass to make 7.7 Jap and 7.65 Argentine with no ill effects. Most of the brass I used for the 7.7 was WWII vintage. It still worked just fine. You should be just fine.
