FEDEX refuses to ship CMP garand

I had some problems with my CMP special; CMP said to stop using it and mail it back to them for repair or replacement. They sent me a prepaid return label that stated "CMP FFL Exempt" "public law 104-something". The fedex counter person said, "we absolutely cannot accept firearms unless you're a dealer". I am going to go back to the store with my 03 FFL because they said they "might" take it if I bring my "license" and ID.

Does this mean that any non-ffl holding CMP owners have to go through an 01 FFL to ship a rifle back to CMP? (and then deal with the 10 day wait BS?)
This is so aggravating... The counter people really spazzed out about it; they're prolly calling Homeland Stupidity as we speak...

Ask for a supervisor...what they'll take and how they'll take it is defined in their tariff's, which you can find on their website.

No need for a shipper to have an FFL if they're shipping a weapon back for repair, whether it's to a smith, manufacturer, or the CMP.

I tried telling them that, got the supervisor, they asked if I was sending it back to the manufactureer, I said "yes". Then they called someone, but unfortunately whoever they called was also ignorant of their own policies and federal law...

When you deal with a FedEx storefront operation (oftentimes a "FedEx Office" or fomer Kinko's operation -- Kinko's hired the mentally challenged even before FedEx bought them), you are dealing with the next level up the ladder from burgerflippers and greeters.

Same deal with shipping ammo. The FedEx storefronts haven't a clue. I had to go to a Fedex "World Service Center" just half a mile down the street from the clueless place, where some middle-aged women who have been doing this for ages knew exactly what stickers to put on and what to write. "Don't go to the regular FedEx places, they won't know what to do," she said. Yup, I already found that out...

          That's because they're stupid.

          Ship it through the USPS.

I like using the mail, and FedEx is ignoring their own tariff.

FedEx Ground will transport and deliver firearms (excluding handguns) as defined by the United States Gun Control Act of 1968, between areas served in the U.S., but only between:

Licensed importers; licensed manufacturers; licensed dealers; licensed collectors; law enforcement agencies of the U.S. or any department or agency thereof; and law enforcement agencies of any state or any department, agency or political subdivisions thereof; or
Where not prohibited by local, state and federal law, from individuals to licensed importers, licensed manufacturers or licensed dealers (and return of same).
You can ship as a collector, and in this instance, as an individual.

I thought it was a federal offense to bring a firearm onto federal property? There's a big anti-gun sign in every post office! Side issue, anyway, I called CMP and they said some fedex offices (like the kinkos/fedex I brought it to) have their own policies, so they just made a pickup appt. for me, so hopefully the driver isn't as stupid and ignorant as the fedex counter people at kinkos...

You have to use UPS. When I shipped an SKS I had to ship it from the main UPS distributing center, as the ups store wouldn't do it.

You can bring firearms onto USPS property for "official purposes", which means using the mail. You can't use USPS for handguns unless you are a dealer.

Shipping a long gun through USPS (they don't do handguns at all), is also a hit and miss proposition.

I've gotten different levels of FUD from different people at the post office. I've heard everything from "Absolutely NO firearms at all;" "You can ship the rifle, but it has to be taken apart;" "You can ship the rifle but we have to open the box and inspect it," to what the case actually is, where they will just ship it, as per their regulations (no special handling, no extra labels showing that it's a firearm).

Use another shipper, and send an email to the FEDEX head guy. The board of directors are linked on their main website. Just "drill up" and get to the chairman. Pick the guy with the most letters after his name and send him (Her?) a quick email. Dont have to rag on them too hard, just let them know they missed a sale. Sure, maybe a staffer will open it and shuffle it down for a response, but when you tell them you gave your money to another company, it will put a burr under their saddle. If you get the usual canned placating letter from some schmuck they passed it off to, respond again, but copy the flunky's letter and your response back to the big guy. And be polite and to the point.
They could care less what you are shipping, they want the money.

Yes they do. Dealer to dealer. I ship them all the time. They HAVE to ship it.

If you are legally shipping it (for repair, unloaded, etc.) you dont have to tell them what it is.
I believe it is actually in their rules somewhere (they have many) that there are to be no references to firearms on the outside of the package. Don't tell them nothing. Just box it up and send it.

Within an hour of calling CMP and telling them that the FEDEX store wouldnt ship the rifle, FEDEX was knocking at my door to pickup the rifle, so off it went. I just hope i get it back soon now.

BTW CMP people are a real nice, competent group of people, pleasure doing business with them and I love their accents!
