M1 garand value

a friend was going to sell me a nice SKS. well his refrigerator died and he wants to sell me his springfield M1 for 1,000. sorry no other details right now. he has had it for more than 10 years and has shot it before without problems. he said the wood was very nice. is this the going RETAIL price. thanks

No way to give an accurate appraisal without pictures, or at least a parts breakdown. Could be Springfield commercial junk, or an all correct WWII rifle. Value could be anywhere from $400 to $4000.

Just remember, unless it is notably beautiful condition or an IHC or Winchester, etc. you can get a beautiful Service Grade from the CMP for $625.00 and you will know exactly what you are getting and will have the CMP to stand behind it.

If one just goes through the minimal hoops to get a CMP rifle (and their various grades go all the way up to new-barrel, new-stock), those represent the absolute bottom floor of Garand prices for each quality grade.

Everybody selling a Garand seems to expect to be compensated for the base cost of the rifle, PLUS the dealer / DROS fees they had to pay way back when, PLUS the hyped "collector value" etc. etc. This is like selling a used car and expecting the buyer to make good on all the money paid for insurance coverage in the meantime...

It seems nobody ever undercuts the CMP on price. Unless somebody is super desperate for fast cash.

what is a IHC.
i think a Garand is a must for WW2 rifles collectors, but i could get about 6 mosins on sale for the same money. i love opening that box and seeing what GEM is inside. my last was a mint 1935 hex IZZY all matching and no counter bore 118 bucks.

Why not? It is not difficult to qualify any more, you don't even have to shoot a match, just show proof of firearms related activity, and not even that if you are over 60.

Do you have an HSC? Can you afford $25.00 to join the Garand Collectors Association? Congratulations, you just qualified.

Can't figure out why people seem put out by CMP qualification? It's not that hard and they do want to sell you a rifle. Unless you are buying a high end $5,000.00 + collectors grade, most people who buy a non-CMP Garand get ripped off, if anything.

I put of the CMP paperwork for years. Finally I just did it. Altogether it probably took about half a day of paperwork, notary, USPS, traveling time. I probably went a slightly round about way using my C&R to qualify, but could have just as easily used my HSC without waiting for ATF to process my paperwork. I just wanted a reason to used my newly minted FFL03!

That's because they are retailers (and in the case of Turner's: ripoff artists, in my opinion). They buy at prices at, or below what you would see at CMP and then they flip them for a profit. Don't buy from them.
