Refinishing USGI stock -- where to get Chestnut Ridge dye?

    Hi, all.

I'm refinishing an original Garand stock.

I'll be using boiled linseed oil, as I've had good luck with it in the past.

But, I'd like to get back the original reddish color. I figured I'd use this -- Chestnut Ridge Dark Military Walnut Stain.

Rather than order and wait, does anybody know of a shop in SoCal that carries it?

An alternative would be Fiebing's leather dye, also alcohol based, and available from Tandy Leather. There's one near me. But I don't see anything particularly "reddish" unless maybe their mahogany fills the bill.

Also, my understanding is that these products (either one) can be applied even after the linseed oil goes on, as it is alcohol based and will penetrate. Is that right?

    Thanks in advance.

I had to look at the bottle, but I have used Fiebings on a number of M1 stocks with very good results. Mine is labled "Dark Brown Professional Oil Dye", and it turns the reddish tint when applied to walnut or birch.

I don't know about applying it after the linseed oil, I always put it on before. Seems to me that if you do it after the LO, penetration and color would be uneven.

      Thanks.

Looks like I can get Fiebig's at the local Tandy Leather, on my way over there later today. I have an e-mail in to Chestnut Ridge asking if it can go on over the oil, no reply yet.

Eager to get the oil on this Garand!

Where are you located in So. Cal. I may still have mine sitting around somewhere. Will need to look.

The Tandy near me doesn't carry the Fiebings "spirit dye" and they told me it can't be ordered in CA. I went to a shoe repair and got Angelus Shoe Dye in brown. It's a "spirit" type dye that uses denatured alcohol. Even the water based stuff Tandy (Eco-Flo) sells will work when diluted with denatured alcohol. Any dark brown has red in it. Avoid any "Tan" colored brown like "Tree Bark", it has yellow in it.
