1st Big 5 Mosin Nagant ? on Value and Accessories

Hey guys, trying to pick up my first Mosin with Big 5's sale. They are currently selling for $120 before a 10% off coupon. Now I've heard this has been a very affordable rifle with some people buying one for even $60 but I've had a heckuva time finding one for that price or near $100. I've looked for about 3 months now and haven't had any luck finding one until today.

With Big 5's sale, I figured the guns would be selling, but I didn't realize they were Sold Out almost everywhere. Checked all Big 5s in Milpitas, Modesto, Fremont, and finally San Jose. Most were already sold out in San Jose except two, each in different shops. I drove around the city to check out each one and luckily found one in pretty good condition, whereas the other was a round bolt, sorta beat up looking rifle. The one I currently have on hold has a hex receiver, is a Tula ( the star with the arrow) and has all matching serials at 26102, I did not get the year. Used my LED keychain light to look down the barrel and everything looked nice and shiny with the bolt nice and smooth when pulling. It was still semi caked in cosmoline but I couldn't find a speck of rust on it and the stock looked like it was in pretty good condition with no dings or major scuffs/scratches in the wood.

I'm new to the rifle though and when I came by to check out the rifle in person (the guy sent me home because they were closing and there wasn't a manager to check me off so I was told to return and finalize the sale tomorrow) there were already others looking at the rifle, one trying to push to sell it off. Well after talking to the sales person though, the guy told me the gun was barebones. I asked him if it had any of the accessories, strips, cleaning kit, pouches, etc and he told me no, the rifle was just the rifle. Now is that normal or should I push them to look in the back or check stock if they have the accessories? At $120 it seems like a lot for just the rifle, although this seems to be a version that many people have searched for. Any advice is appreciated. With $120, going down to $110 with the coupon, wondering if its worth it even if I have to search one by one for the accessories that came with it, or should I pass this up and continue on with my search? Maybe the guy behind the counter was just too lazy to look as I would imagine these came in boxes?

For a hex Tula you can forgo the accessories. Not that it is really any more valuable than a round Izzy, just slightly more rare. It stinks that it does not come with accessories, but they aren't really necessary. I have several sets of accessories that just sit in a box somewhere, in case I ever sell any of my Mosins. The days of the $60 Mosin are long gone. You can find a slightly better deal online if you're a C&R 03FFL holder, but if not, than buying one at Big 5 or from a private seller will be your best bet. Be careful though, one Mosin will turn into five real quick.

I have one I am putting up on the forum soon. I will be asking $120 and there won't be a DROS necessary, so that saves you some cash. It has also been free floated and bedded which GREATLY improves accuracy. I need to replace the rear sight pins for $3 a piece but if you buy it before I do so, you can have it for $100 out the door. I can also tell you where to get the sight pins.

You wont really need any of the acessories but the tool and the sling but you can easly pick those up seperate for cheap.

A Tula Hex is more desired then other ones, I'd go for it
btw It's a hex receiver not bolt

Thanks sorry, lol its been a long night. Printed all the paperwork from recommendations and 7.62x54r.net before I went to look at it. Was extremely helpful in helping me figure out what I was looking at. Much harder though, then looking for a brand new gun.

i bought 3 at big 5 and 1 at turners, happy with all of them. the war years round Izzy that has been threw referb are very good rifles. my best find was a 1935 matching Izzy HEX. only 1 out of 3 was not counter bored. really the counter bore job is only a problem for fussy collectors. it helps accuracy and that is what they did to them back then. that is better than a un counter bored shot out crown.

I bought two 91-30's that came with accessories (bayo, mag pouches, ect )but I never used them. They sit in my closet.

So I came back to Big 5 today to finalize the sale. There was a new manager that was helping me and I asked him to check out the back if there was a box with the tools just in case (I really wanted that bayonet). He didn't find it but found another one stashed away hidden under old stock for some reason, even though it was one they got in for their sale.

Checked it out, and it was a izzy 1929 matching serials, hex receiver, and a beauty of a stock. The metal was much nicer and the stock looked much nicer then the Tula that I had held for me. I've ready there is some contention between Izzy and Tula, but since the Tula was a 1939 and the Izzy looked so much cleaner inside and outside (remembered to bring my flashlight to check out the barrel and mag) and came with all the accessories, I had to get it. The guy even felt bad after I complained a bit and knocked off $10 off of it.

Looks like I'll be picking up the Izzy Aug. 13! I assume that is what all of you guys mean by getting the rifle out of jail?

If I am understanding correctly the Tula is a 1939 but has a hex receiver? If thats the case then thats the one you should have gotten. Hex receivers were phased out at Tula in 1936 so for a 1939 to have a hex receiver means the receiver was recycled. Not uber rare but definatly uncommon, especialy on a 1939. I usually see them on 1943 Tulas.
The one you have in jail is a 1929 Izhevsk? That one could be either a prototype M91/30 or an updated dragoon. You will need to look at the rear sight base to tell. One is not more valuable than the other IMO. Post pics when you get it.

OP: Snag that rifle, clean it up, show off a few pictures and shoot well !

                      Congratulations,

ps. It's almost surreal that the M91/30's are in that kind of demand in your area. I can pretty much find em everywhere in O.C. Don't worry, you have access to them just not at the price point you desire.

Will post pics, as for the Tula...after going on 7.62x54r.net and not seeing that date on the tula with a hex, I actually thought that it sent up red flags where as the hex on the Izzy seemed legitimate so I did not want to take any chances. Still found it odd they did not have the box, accessories, or anything else with it but just barebones.

As for the price, I looked long and hard for one at $100. Probably wasted more time calling and spent a few hours driving around to different big 5's sitting in traffic. After all these months, I did not want to wait anymore and this sale just made it more worthwhile, so count me as a happy camper. That and the guy threw in the trigger lock so thats about $100 right there lol, I've never complained when buying something before...may have to try that a bit more now especially when its merited.

I want to say that Big 5 was going to or did try to charge extra for the bayo/accessories. As for the list on 7.62x54r.net it is a very basic list of Mosin one is most likely to see. The very odd variants (ie hex receivers on rifles way out of the dated hex range) are not on that list. The recycled receivers interest me. Just think, that 1939 Tula may have had a pre 1898 receiver which would have made the rifle an antique which means, NO DROS and its Cash and Carry. I highly doubt Big 5 would honor that however let alone let you tear the rifle down to check. Welcome to the world of Mosins and dont fret not finding one for $100 or less. The only Mosin I have ever gotton for less than $100 was a 1925 Tula on an auction site, $90 + shipping.

I do think nowadays you got a good price for going to Big5. Some people get them for less and some pay more. But you got one you really liked and that's the joy of collecting (what you thought you would only buy one?)

Personally, I think you should have picked up both of them. They might cut a special deal for two. At least when you dros two together, you only have to pay one dros fee - now that's savings.

                            Congrats on your first Mosin!!!
