re do on a mosin stock

i have used miniwax polyurethane on 2 rifle stocks and was satisfied with the results. just to try something else i went to fowlers gun store and they said try LIN SPEED oil. it is supposed to dry in 2-8 hrs. i rubbed in 3 finger thin coats. it looks good but it still is tacky after 2 days. my question is can i 0000 steal wool it and put miniwax polyurethane over it. . i followed the directions . rubbed in a thin coat, after 8 Hrs i lightly used 0000 steal wool and installed another very thin finger rubbed in coat. i did this 3 times. i used this stuff on a small hand guard on another rifle and it was still slightly tacky after 4 days. i did put it on too thick so i thought this might turn out better. the directions say it is made of boiled linseed oil and petroleum thinner. if i do to strip it and start over what should i strip it with ? thanks.

You just need to put it in the sun for a few days. it will dry just slow. The cosmo in the stock is not allowing the cure of the oils. It will it just takes time. But if I needed to strip it I would use Minwax Antique Furniture Refinisher.
You got to keep on keep'in on!!!!

i put it in the sun and cosmo started to find its way out of the wood. this is after a major prep job with denatured alcohol. it did not seem to hurt the finish. i guess i just need to give it more time. it looks good though. thanks

Just remember that while cosmo can cause some refininishing angst, without that cosmo, that rifle would probably be rusted up more than the undercarriage of a car in Boston by now. Just keep reminding yourself of that as you continue to get the cosmo out of the wood. :-)

i put the mini wax poly over the lin Speed brand. 3 Hrs done deal . dry i guess if you have a lot of time the linseed oil is nice. just do not try to go shooting anytime in the near future.
