Mounting a LT front base on a k98

Does anyone know how far to drill the holes for the front base on a LT on a k98? Im assuming maybe 2 threads deeper than the actual mounting screw and NOT all the way through the receiver but hey, assuming has set me wrong before. Thanks in advance.

About .005 deeper than the screw protrusion through the base. You'll need a bottoming tap to cut the threads too. Most important thing on any receiver D&T, is not drilling into the recoil lug area. Turret mounts shouldn't have that problem though.
Makes ya nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs, sinking that first hole, don't it?
Some guys silver solder the mount in position to make sure it's all lined up and level, and use it for a drilling jig. If your mounts came from Accumount, he usually has some pretty good "how to" instructions. Contact him here: info@accumounts.com

I actually have not ordered mounts yet. Ive had the rifle for years, a very nice RC BYF41 that shoots great! I just recently came upon a repro Jena scope for a steal. I havent built a sniper in a couple years and I kinda got the itch.
I have done an LSR but thats the only K98 Ive ever done. Ive re-snipered an EX PU, PE and PEM however. Just getting all the info before I start.
Is silver solder really what I should use for the front base? Isnt that a high temp solder?

mutt, I haven't used the solder myself, but I know a few that have. Some use the high temp stuff for a permanent solution with the screws, and some have used the low temp just for positioning the mounts. No one makes a D&T jig for these mounts.
I've got one in the works that I'm doing too. I'm trying to gather info on soldering the repro scope to the solid rings, and I'm not finding much to work with. Even the repros are too expensive to make mistakes on.
There's a guy on the GB auction side, that builds repro snipers, with data gleaned from the German arsenal gunsmiths that originally built them. He's a good source for doing it the right way. Unfortunately I lost his contact info, I think I deleted it cleaning out my email box. When I find it again, I'll forward it to you.

I have heard that JB Weld works well for attaching the scope to the solid rings. Im still waiting for the scope to arrive before I decide what Im going to do regarding that.
