@Vlad 11, Well it came off like a cheap paint job, but I doubt it was painted because it had so much cosmoline on it you could dunk another mosin in it with the extra which means it probably wasn't touched for a while. I'll take some pictures.

@rojocorsa, going to get some pictures up here soon and am going to shoot it as soon as possible. Closest I can shoot this surplus is in the Desert BLM areas

@chknlyps2, there is very minor rust spots on the bolt in some 90* curves, though it could just be cosmoline my brush didn't reach. The rusted spots on the barrel does not have any more rust on it, just the divets left from the rust that ate at it for a while. Looks like whoever owned this rifle knew to keep the bore very clean, but didn't know to take care of the outside. Doing the stock with heat treatment, no water or soap touching this thing!

Did you find out if it was an ex-drag?

I have a 31 Izhevsk, but its force matched. The receiver and barrel and that stuff does match though. I haven't touched this gun, and it pulls 2.5" with Soviet Ball ammo.

One of my Mosins has some dark flaky stuff that looked like a bad paint job or might have been a sloppy shellac job on the stock that got all over the metal.

WD-40 also works very well to remove cosmo from the metal parts. It will additionally provide pretty decent rust-protection. Yeah, yeah, I know, WD-40 doesn't make a good gun lube, and that's correct; I don't use it as such. But it does make a good solvent and rust protectant.

I just picked up my first Mosin (91/30) Thursday. Used WD40 and the 106 degree day to get most of the cosmo out. Seemed to work fine, but how the hell do I get the WD40 off now? Prefer to just use a good gun oil, but the WD won't really wipe off.

I have two out of three, a mauser and a SMLE, does mean I'm only partly hooked?

It sounds crazy but I used a wood cleaner cloth on the stock and barrel and the cosmo was gone. The inner workigs i used mineral spirts and they worked ok.

Bluing doesn't just scrape or flake right off

Paint, however, does. The Soviets used paint in some places on a rifle during refurb

Just picked up my first mosin, bought it 3 weeks ago! Took delivery of Winchester gun safe today, movers would only bring it into front door! Had to rent dolley to move it into bedroom! On way home I checked that turners was open till 8pm so i swung by turners and picked her up! Snuck it in new safe and wife has no idea! Barrel and stock are nice! Trigger is crappy, any recommendations on how to fix trigger affordably? Trigger is not smooth at all, my dumb newb *** forgot to dry fire before I bought, I was so focused on barrel, stock, matching numbers! Live and learn! Next on list is sks and AK 47 or 74
