    Help me ID this Remington

My grandmother just gave me this rifle, and it's pretty awesome.

On the rifle, it says it's from 1853, but I'm not sure if that's accurate.

    Any ideas?

It looks like it might be a Stevens single shot in .22 or .32 rimfire. Does it have a maker on the barrel?

Looks like a Remington Rolling Block carbine. Forend appears to be cut down. They didn't start making these until the mid-1860's.

What caliber is it in, and what else does it say on the rifle?

        Thanks,

I believe it is an early pre-rolling block with a "split breech". I am a little rusty but this appears to be one of the first designs before Rider redesigned it to the one that is far more familiar. The name Geiger comes to mind, but I dont have my reference materials handy.
            Nice find.

From Flaydermans's Guide to Antique American Firearms:::

Remington "split breech", Type 1, Type 2, Type 3. Calibers .46 or .50 rimfire.

From the shape of the buttstock it looks like a Type 1. Manufactured 1864-1865. "Short forend". The U.S. military inspector stamp would be in the wood and is probably now gone.

              Serial number anywhere?

They were manufactured by a sub-contractor: Savage Revolving Arms Co, Middletown, Connecticut.

The patent dates (its 1863 not 1853) are unrelated to dates of manufacture.

The heavy varnish or urethane on the stock hurts value considerably.

Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

Geiger patent pre-rolling block. Some were made for the Union cavalry in the Civil War but too late to be used. Fires one of the Spencer .56 or .50 RF ctgs. Valuable even in altered condition (forend by Bubs...sad). I'll look it up in de Haas' book and see if I can find out more.

Shame about the forestock and the poly, but still a nice rifle.

If the poly was removed, wouldn't that help?

I think that depends on who is interested. Even if the poly was removed, the forestock was still chopped. I don't think it would hurt anything though.
