    Stevens Model 44 Tang sight

    Greetings,
Do any of our board members know which tang sight will fit the factory holes in a Stevens model 44 single shot rifle?
I just picked one up and I need to use a tang sight. Old eyes.

    Thanks

    RE:Stevens 44

Jeff's outfitters sells a new one for $65-it will fit.The Holes tapped in the tang are inch and a half inches apart and are threaded 5-40NC.i do not know if the mounting screws are included with the sight.

Peter, that's not the one, and I don't see it listed on Jeff's site now. It's an exact replica of the original.
Call him and ask, he's a great guy and will go out of his way to take care of you. He has a lot of stuff he doesn't list on his website. If he still has the Stevens tang sights, ask about a Beech front sight to go with it, makes a great combo for "old eyes". The front sight dovetail is an oddball, I think it's 7/16ths? Jeff can verify that too.
        What caliber is your rifle?

          Stevens model 44

          Trap55,
The Stevens model 44 is in 32 Long RF. I have already contacted Hayley Custom Ammunition and I will be ordering the brass and bullets for this.
Serial number is 3419X, so it was probably made circa 1905.

If you really are interested in single shot rifles, you could try the "Single Shot Exchange" magazine. They have a website, but you'b do better talking to Brett Boyd himself.Great guy to talk to.Cost is $36 for 12 issues, and yes they do shipp to California.Great Magazine been taking it for 17 years now.

Peter, I remember an article in Handloader magazine that showed how to make reloadable .32 RFs. If you want, I'll look for it and let you know which issue. You can usually get back issues from Wolf Publishing. PM me.

                  Stevens model 44

                  Mike,
Thanks. I have the issue and I have used the information in the article to order the components to assemble the 32 Long RF cartridge.
I would not have bought the gun if I did not have that article.

                  Trap55,
Nice sight, but more than half of what I paid for the rifle. I have a $65 Italien sight coming that has 1.5 inch spacing.

According to Stroebel a lyman #1 or #2 is a proper tang sight. (among others)
The lyman list indicates a #1 or #2 sight marked "F" is proper -
Your hole pattern is listed as 1.50 inches center to center and uses either 5x40 or 8x40 screws.
The collecting, identifying, and shooting, (sometimes), of stevens weapons can be rewarding as well as challenging.
In fact almost all single shots are winners.

                        Syevens 44 tang sight

                        gunboat,
Thanks for the information. Those Lyman #1 and #2 sights are quite dear (many $'s). I will try my cheapo Italien sight. For the amount that I will be shooting the 32 Long RF, that should work just fine.
