    Finally going to do it

After hemming and hawing for a few weeks, I finally got the paperwork together for a CMP Garand. Just need to get a copy of my birth certificate and I'm all set! I think in a couple of months I'll get one of those .308 ones, too.

Congrats - So what did you do more of hemming or hawing?

You won't be sorry, Mofo! I maybe a fool for other reasons but not for parting with the funds for one of these.

My only regret was not knowing about the program sooner so as to have gotten a SG Winchester somewhat close to the condition my post-war SA is in. Keep us posted with what you end up with (pics are always nice).

I know I'm gonna get got, but I'm going to get mine more than I get got though.

          Why a .308...?

The Service Grades of late are comin' out w/ near-new bores and the CMP sells M2 ball for $0.50/ea. (and the 30-06 is a better round ta boot)

You can always re-Bbl it in the future w/ the same Criterion (30-06 or .308) Bbl for LESS than the cost difference b/t the Service Grade and the Service Grade Special.

          Win/Win.

That's an awesome idea, thanks for the advice. I've seen that one gunsmith on the web that will rechamber a Garand for .308 and modify it to take M1A mags. I've thought about getting a barreled receiver to have that done with sometime down the road (it'd be a shame to cut up a historic rifle, but if it's just a receiver, that's a different story)

....aannnnnnnd I'm still in a holding pattern because the birth certificate copy my parents have is so faded it's illegible. The good news is, I still live in the same city where I was born, so getting a new copy is a snap. The bad news is, my work schedule makes getting down to the clerk's office is a PITA. I'd hoped having an 03 FFL would be proof enough, but I guess not.
