Gun show finds at Santa Barbara Historical Arms and Blades Show

Went to the SB gun show this weekend on Saturday and was pleasantly surprised to find a Danzig 1916 Gew.98 (exact factory code I was looking for) in pretty good condition. Anyone know the story behind these rifles? It doesn't have the Lange (roller coaster) rear sight, but a regular tangent rear sight seen on K98s and the like. Other than that, it seems like the rifle was reblued at some point in Germany after the war, from my understanding. I decided to pick it up since I was looking for a nice Gewehr 98 with Danzig factory code to add to my collection.

Also picked up a nice 1941 Lithgow Pattern 1907 bayonet that conveniently is the same year and maker as my Lithgow No.1 Mk.III* SMLE rifle, so that was also a nice find.

I'll post pics when I can, of course.

What did you guys get at the gun show, if anything?

Checked out the Del Mar show this weekend. It SUCKED! Anything I found interesting witch wasn't much was way over priced. And about 30% of the sellers there where selling non gun related stuff. Witch makes it look for like a flea market than a gun show. Wast of time and money.

Picked me up a decent M1 Carbine and bayonet. The bayonet was not that great, but it was free.

I was trying to pick up a 1891 Argentine. I think woman have an easier time picking shoes at the store than me finding a nice piece.

Crossroads of the West gun show? In my experience, they aren't much to write home about.

The SB Historical Arms and Blades show made me feel like a kid in a candy store with all the milsurp and C&R guns in there. I didn't really care that there wasn't that much of a presence of tacticool or black rifles at that show.

Tangent rear sight means it was probably rebuilt by germany in the mid 1930s. Does it have "S/42/K" on the rear sight base by any chance?

I have one like that, that is dual-dated. The sight does have the s/42, but with a "G" suffix, on the sightbase. AS MN9130 says, rebuilt in Germany in the 30's.

Did you get a good deal on yours?

Mine is not dual-dated, but it does have the S/42G stamping on the rear sight assembly. Some Googling reveals that the stamp is from Mauser who made these rear sights for these reworked Gew98s?

Mine is not double dated, it just says "Danzig 1916" with the Hohenzollern crown above the stamping.

I think I got an OK deal. Some further research shows that the rifles aren't as uncommon as I thought they'd be, but for the price I paid, it's in pretty good condition overall. Bore is a little dark, but rifling is sharp. I think it'll shine up nicely with some JB?

                S/42G is 1935.

I found nothing of serious intrest there, though it was neat. I almost bought a Pattern 14 from a guy there, but then I was like "nah". I was also looking around for a P1907 bayonet, looks like I didn't look hard enough, lol nice mauser you got there though. Glad it wasn't such a bust for you as it was for me. Also, did you see that godawful looking blue-stocked Berthier M16? That made me laugh a bit.

What was the guy asking for the P-14?
