WW I Luger Snail Drum Questions ???

Recently decided to get rid of toys I don't actually use, so I can buy new ones. I have a very nice Type 2 Artillery Luger Snail Drum magazine that has functioned flawlessly for me (I recently sold the proprietary Loader for it). I would like to sell it and the dust cover (Cover sells for $150-200 quite easily). I also have a reproduction leather case for carry and storage. My question is; since it is a 32 round magazine and hasn't been made since WW I ( C&R eligible ?), is this legal for someone in Cali to own? Could I legally ship this to a purchaser in Cali, if one were interested?

    Thanks in advance

    I think > 10 rounds is a no-go in California, regardless of C&R status

Legal to own and use in California, but illegal to sell, offer for sale, give, lend, manufacture or import.

Not legal to transfer in CA post 2000. You would be very very foolish to try to take it apart or block it to hold 10 rounds. List it on GunBroker at a high price or with a high reserve. Even though many collectors will get pissed, you will get far more if you list all the parts separately. You can list all the parts except the drum on Ebay. You may be able to get away with listing it on Ebay if you don't mention the capacity is more than 10 rounds. Most people who would flag the listing don't know what a snail drum is. Ebay has far more buyers than GunBroker does. The serious collectors with money are not in the US. The UK & France has some very wealthy collectors. GLWS

Yikes - aren't these unobtainium? What would a collector pay for this? (Just curious).

Seems like GunBroker may not be your best bet, there have to be enclaves of collectors for this item. GB - you might get the lowballers on an item this rare.

Yes, they are so-what rare. They do come up for sale every now and then. Dealers would be asking in the $2K range for a nice one (Drum only). I was looking to recoup my original investment for the grouping at $1850. Thanks for letting me know about the illegality of selling this to Cali.

Taking it apart without damage, selling all the parts, etc. IMO.

Since he is in Arizona he would have no problem selling it as a complete magazine, as long as he didn't ship it to a restricted State.

The only way that it would be legal in CA is if was disassembled and sold as replacement parts. The whole magazine can be sold as a unit but it must be disassembled.

Put it on Gunbroker. You'll do much better there. Rock Island Auction takes a huge cut and their appraisers aren't that great and they won't do much to promote it.

Whatever you do, for God's sake, don't part it out. You might get an extra $100, but then that unit that has been together forever is lost to history. If it is complete and works, list it with great pictures on GB at a reserve or starting price you would be happy with. I bet you could get 2k for it if the condition is very good.

I didn't realize that he had sold the very hard to find loader already. I thought he had the complete set: drum, loader, adapter, dust cover & case. I meant that he should sell each component separately not as a set. Doing that forces a collector to fight it out with others just looking for something like the loader. I saw an MP-44 kit listed as individual pieces sell for 1/3 more than a complete kit on GB.

Trying to take the drum itself apart would be foolish.

Sorry, I thought you wanted him to part the drum out like a parts kit.
