Cosmoline is a combination of wax and various other petroleum based oils. It has a relatively low melting point, as it melts at approximately 110-120 degrees. The very quickest and easiest way to remove it is using plain old hot water. If your wife is not home, turn your hot water heater up as high as it will go, wait a few minutes and rinse the parts in the kitchen sink using the spray attachment. It will rinse right off; or you can hook up a hose to the out flow of your hot water heater and rinse the parts in the driveway. Either way, the parts will be clean in just a very few minutes with very little mess. The hot water will help the parts dry, so a bit of oil as appropriate and the job is finished.

I do understand that it is counterintuitive, to use just plain hot water, but it works really well.

Okay use mineral spirits to clean the cosmo and us the hot water after you let parts sit in mineral spirits, its the best way

I use the bath tub filled with hot water....works every time. It sucks to clean the bath tub after though.

I just did my Mosin cosmo removal out in the backyard not ten minutes ago. Bolt and receiver were relatively uncaked but all of the accessories and some of the internals were caked with it. An hour in a bath of degreaser and a few dunks with some boiling water out of our kettle and all was good. Have to oil everything up now.

I'm mainly talking about the wood I it all the metal stuff cleaned

Put the wood in a black plastic trash bag and let that sit in direct sunlight. Wipe off every once in a while..

Wrapped with paper towels and put in black plastic trash bag. Set out in driveway in the sun for an hour or two. Wipe and repeat as necessary and be careful not to burn your fingers. I did this with all the parts of my field stripped CMP Garand. Worked like a charm.

Throw the stock outside in the sun for a good hour or two, you'll actually bleed out some of the cosmo from the wood and your gun will smell slightly less.

No the wood it worked perfectly no damage to the wood
