    Mosin surprise

After spending a couple of hours each weekend cleaning off cosmoline/grease from my rifle, and a few nights after work running patches down the bore...

    I found this...

Didn't catch it when inspecting because it was pretty filthy. Mineral spirits helped tremendously and I did get the bore super clean (can now see the nice rifling)... oh well... I guess now it's a wall hanger.

Sorry, I can't see what the problem is?

yup, right where the rim of the cartridge seats. i'm guessing a round went kaboom in there.

sucks, if you want to restore it to firing condition you could always find a stripped hex receiver so its still proper for the era of the rest of the rifle and don't forget to check headspace and correct if necessary afterwards. otherwise you have a somewhat rare wall hangar

Dang, all my Mosins have a broken chamber too, you should donate that one to my collection.

That's the extractor cut, your rifle is okay.

I dont see the problem either. I believe it is made that way on purpose. I'm no expert but that space is there for the extractor.

Remember that unlike the Mauser, the Mosin's extractor has to rotate when you turn the bolt so the groove has to be big to accommodate that.

                            Got one just like that.

I was wondering why my 1925 Tula is so accurate.... it has a special groove on the side of the chamber.

Every time I get a new Finn I dig all the crap out of the extractor cut and I'm amazed at all of the sand, pebbles, metal bits and wood particles that I find in there, all covered with gooey black grease. It's like being an archaeologist!!

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.
