I walked into Big 5 today, like I do every week, and they had some authentic M1 carbines! I have never seen them in there before. Your guys Big 5s carry them? They wanted $699.

Big 5 carrying M1 Carbines??!

I see them often. Saw a USGI one, but it was in bad condition, but it was the cheapest one I saw at about 450 bucks. The post war commercials surprisingly fetch a higher premium at Big 5s than the USGI ones.Alexander Pawelczyk

Dude, I was excited when I saw that. I rushed down to my local Big5. But that .22 M1 carbine is a POS. It's almost all plastic minus the bolt, receiver and barrel, and it feels like a toy. If you can find the wood version, it's a little better, but still a POS overall. For the price and it being made in Italy I was very disappointed. Just go down and hold one for yourself...
The stocks are supposed to be mil-spec though, so they can be used on an actual M1 carbine. Not worth $300+ though.
That said, they do carry actual M1 carbines but they are horribly overpriced. The brand/manufacture will vary, most seem to be "Universal" and another company I forget the name. They do feel less like a toy though and have almost all metal components.
EDIT: Should note some seem to be actual issue so they're beat to hell, but most will be replica's or re-manufactured to some degree.ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕComment

They have had USGI carbines for at least 4 years. It might be compelling if you could find a Postal Meter, IBM, Rockola, or another lower production contractor if on sale for 600(?). yes they are generally rough but if you look through enough of them you may find something worth it.Comment

The one in there was most definitely rough..... under the rear sight it was "universal"."The purpose of living is to find something worth dying for"Comment

Big 5 selling these isn't any news. They'll also sell K-98s from time to time.
In my experience, the M-1s they have are all beat to ****.
On the brighter side of things, the Mosins they sell now seem to be in better shape because they switched from CAI to PW as the importer.sigpic

Once or twice a year Big 5 puts 30 caliber M1 carbines on sale for $600. I agree with hte previous poster that they are pretty beat up mixmasters. But they're alot of fun to shoot. When their on sale their lowest price I have seen witout going to an individual seller. If CA Gun Laws applied to Freedom of Speech:

Am I remembering correctly that back in the 80's you could find lots of postwar M1 Carbines for ~$100? I seem to recall thinking I should buy a couple, but I never did...

All the Garands and Carbines I've ever seen at big 5 were tent stakes. Doesn't mean you won't find a good one. Glad I got 3 CMP carbines... wish I had gotten more.Comment
