    Murrays Firing Pin - SKS

If you are not aware, Murrays Gunsmithing makes an awesome firing pin (made in USA) with a spring at the front end that allows the pin to be pushed to the rear position when not engaged to eliminate the chance of a stuck firing pin and the "full auto" dangers when it does stick. Its an awesome design and it works...when the spring doesnt get completely compressed in the forward position making it again a "free float" style firing pin.

I have had to send my bolt back to Murrays twice since I have installed it just so they can remove the damaged spring and replace it. I know it has a lot to do with the junk ammo I feed it, but are any of you having this same problem? If so, how do you get the spring back out? Its just an inconvenience to send it back after every shooting trip. Thanks in advance, guys.

I've installed Murrays in Russians, Romys, and Yugos and never had or heard of this problem. Spring installed correct direction? Bolt clean? Pin n spring Lightly oiled? I shoot cheap ammo all the time through mine.

    Burr inside pin channel?
    Good luck

When I initially received the kit in the mail, I cleaned out the bold and installed the pin myself. It functioned great. I hat popped primers in the firing pin hole and thats what jammed it. I called Murrays and they said to send it to them bolt and they would stone the face and do a install the new spring. It was replaced and I went shooting a few weeks ago and it did the same thing. So I sent it back and again it was fixed.

I have been using both Iraqi battlefield pickups and Wolf/Tula brand ammo.

Popped primers mess stuff up, including the original firing pins. I have had bad batches of Wolf, and they refunded my money, including shipping.

Murray makes a nice product, but if you shoot some cleaner in the original bolt once in a while, the chance of going full auto is similar to getting bit by a rattler and hit by lightening at the same time.

I hear that only happens to the Russians - true?
This is sort of backwards. Older Russian SKS's came with spring fitted firing pins, a feature that was not standard in any model thereafter.

I'm far from an expert on the SKS but did a lot of research on the subject when I bought my first one. The expert consensus seems to be as you say. Clean the bolt so the FP rattles back & forth & you should be GTG. I shoot mostly corrosive so I clean the pazizzle out of my rifles after every range trip anyway. So far no rock & roll.

The Murray kit I ordered the same day as my first SKS is in a drawer on my bench.

I just sent my ChiCom bolt to Murray's for the spring installation. Since my original firing pin was destroyed by a pierced primer from some craptastic Tula ammo it was basically done out of neccesity.

            Tula guns = Good

            Tula Ammo = Bad

I bought one early on for my SKS as well but never could get the retaining pin or whatever it is out (I bent a brass punch trying to hammer it out!). I got too lazy since then and haven't had a problem but if anyone has tips, I'd appreciate it

The bolts are not meant to be disassembled for cleaning. That pin is a tough one, and I have read of a few being ruined. Clean the bolt as said before and go with the force.

You need to make sure you have a solid base in which you are working on. If there is movement then it will be difficult to remove since the force is transfered to the moving/unstable areas.
