I am looking at getting a new barrel for my M1. I was wondering if I should buy a new criteron barrel or try to find a 1940's barrel. If I do get the brand new barrel will I be able to shoot in the silhouette matches @ Sac Valley. I have a1940 receiver and I would like to have a 1940's barrel. Idealy a 1940 barrel would be best but they would be to expensive and hard to find.

You will pay a huge premium for a barrel with a good bore from that time period. If you want to hit what you are aiming at for a decent price, the Criterion is far better than any GI barrel from the 40's. It will be perfect for the silhouette matches. -
X2 of what he said. Criterion is 10X better than the best USGI tube made in the 1940s. The heat treatment and the manufacturing tolerances of today's tube maker is much tighter which equates to tighter group.
Criterion tube is legal for all CMP matches therefore legal for our Military Silhouette Match at Sac Valley. In fact the 1917 Eddy I shot last Saturday had Criterion tube and shot well.Comment

I sold a '40 dated barrel three yrs. ago, got almost $700 for it!! That being said, I would go for a criterion barrel or if you can find a good deal on a 50's or 60's dated GI barrel that is also an option. One more option,, the dutch made some very impressive barrels for thier Garand rifles, they meet or exceed NM specs, they have the dutch crown on them and are marked "VAR". They are great barrels.
Hope I didnt baffle you with too many options. JTComment

Wasn't the last Garand made in 1957? The latest barrel date I have ever seen is 1955 on a 5.8 million SA Garand.I sold a '40 dated barrel three yrs. ago, got almost $700 for it!! I think 1956 was the yr. for the last "official" M1, but some later serial numbers have shown up, so the date of the last one is debatable.
replacement barrels were made by Springfield Armoury up till 1967, these are some pretty fine shooting barrels also. Another option for those looking for a replacement barrel. The upside to using a USGI barrel is 99% of the time the headspace is good to go, whereas a privately made barrel such as criterion will need to be reamed to get the desired headspace.Comment

What ever barrel you do get, you will need a gunsmith to install that barrel. I would most "HIGHLY" suggest that you have KENDOG4570 do it for you. He is a perfectionist. Very professional. He knows, in my opinion, more than other gunsmiths that I have met over the years. His advice here on CG should not be taken for granted. It should be taken as a sponge soaking up knowledge when it comes to gunsmithing questions when we ask him. Just do it right the first time when you buy a barrel and enjoy shooting those matches. Remember a good gunsmith's work will also show on your scores at those matches.I am looking at getting a new barrel for my M1. On that point, I've heard good things about:
shuffsparkerizing.com
Heard he also does a very nice re-park.If your M1 is in need of a barrel replacement, I can provide a brand new Criterion .30-06 or .308 barrel (not sold separately) for $175 plus $70 for installation. Or you can send just your barreled receiver (barrel, stripped receiver, stripped bolt, and stripped gas cylinder) and the installation is only $50. If you have your own barrel, I can install that for you, or I can re-crown your old one. And if you want something really unique, I can install one of my .35 Whelen barrels on your rifle for $395.
